Notes from Iraq

23DEC08--So You Think That You Can Dance Iraqi?

Today we went out on patrol with the Iraqis.  We stopped for a time at an Iraqi base.  The commanders shared tea, meanwhile, the Iraqi Soldiers taught us how to dance Iraqi style.

One Iraqi Soldier was talking about his upcoming wedding and through this conversation he explained how the menfolk at least get together for a festive dance.

The dance reminds me of a stereotypical Native American rain dance.  You hold your right hand up with your palm showing.  You hop on your left foot, stomping down with your right as you turn to a side and then repeat.

Honestly, part of me wonders if they made the whole thing up and really they just went back tonight to tell the other Iraqi Soldiers what they convinced us to do, showing them pictures.

The taller Iraqi, who is not wearing any headgear, is the groom-to-be. The group explains to me how they will dance in celebration.

One Soldier clapped, but the actual beat came through a chant-like song.

Sergeant Connaughton steps on to the dance floor, "Hey, I got moves!"

Soon we were all celebrating together. Best wishes to the bride and groom.

The stray puppy that has made our corner of the base his new home. More to follow on this young pup, if he sticks around.

  1. Hi Rich, I have to say your last statement is what I was thinking. Though I do know that belly dancing by women was really started as a way for women to entertain each other.
