Response to Reader, John McNeil: Get Back to Work
Yesterday, I posted a blog entry about the mole cricket. I found my new knowledge of entomology interesting and thought that I would share with readers. One reader, however, did not find the entry interesting. Instead, he wrote to me, "Aren't you supposed to be doing real work over there?"
Uncharacteristically, I responded quite passively. To be fair, there are a number of topics about which I would very much like to write. The trouble is, John, that I cannot write about any topic that I choose. I cannot divulge secret information or details about future or current operations or circumstances that may help the enemy. Additionally, to be prudent, I ought not cover stories that will have an official press release.
My teammates were quick to point out how I should have responded to John. Also, another reader wrote in to say, "JOHN BACK OFF!"
Thank you, Traci, for your support. I appreciate it. Along with my teammates, KC and Jay, you set me straight. Top suggestions on responses to John include:
"Excuse me. Next time I will ask permission before I take a break."
"Good gosh, you're right! How dare I use a computer to share experiences."
and, my favorite,
"Imagine what you could be accomplishing, if you were not on your computer reading blogs."
or, "Shouldn't you be doing something besides surfing the Internet?"
Please, add your suggested responses below.

John has worked hard for and deserves the title of ......... Senator?
Cousin to and chirps like a mole cricket ...... John.
John just hasn't been the same since he saw "Men In Black" and men in uniform make him twice as nervous. Don't be messin' with his bugs!
Crickets: what could be heard when your teammates were responding to John in their more polite and quotable phrases. (Your Terp did a good job translating their French.)

And I was just getting warmed up for the next "identify that sand creature" contest...
Gotta be something to do in the off time to keep your sanity. I'm finding that glimpses into the personal lives and culture of the Iraqis you are working with to be some of the best entries.
