Notes from Iraq

04JUL09--Heath Assessments

Air conditions today resembled a fog of dust, and my team traveled to a nearby U.S. aid station in order to complete redeployment health assessments.

Before redeploying Soldiers back to the States, the Army identifies if Soldiers have medical conditions that require immediate aid through health assessments.  An Army physician saw each member of the team, inquiring about such things as nagging injuries, dental problems, skin irritation, and mental problems.

After being back in the States for 30 days, Soldiers go to an Army hospital or a VA clinic for a post deployment evaluation.  Physicians document health problems stemming from the deployment, as to cover the Soldier and to prevent erronous claims later in life.

Driving through the dusty conditions and the industrial smog to get to the appointment kept airway concerns fresh in all of our minds, as we draw closer and closer to redeployment and reunion with our families.

The truck in front of us is an Iraqi Army pickup with a bed full of Iraqi Soldiers. The dusty conditions kept the lamposts on even at 0800 hours.

This area near the Tigeris River has significant vegetation.

Yes, the road is fairly narrow, but cars do not hesitate to pass each other on curves.
