Blue Ridge Mountain sports to open in Blacksburg

Blacksburg outdoor enthusiasts who have been without a sleeping bag and dehydrated meals source since Blue Ridge Outdoors closed more than a year ago now have reason to rejoice. A new regional outfitter is coming to town.

Blue Ridge Mountain Sports will open in mid-November in the new First & Main retail center along South Main Street, according to a news release. The store will feature outdoor clothing and footwear as well as technical gear for hiking, backpacking, kayaking and climbing.

The retail chain has 13 stores spread across Virginia, Tennessee and New Jersey. The new 7,000-square-foot Blacksburg store is being constructed with recycled building materials and sustainable design features, the release states.

  1. The nice folks at Back Country Ski & Sports say "hi." The store, inside the town limits out there on S. Main Street in front of the hospital, does sell sleeping bags and dehydrated meals among many other items. Back Country has probably been around as long as the late Blue Ridge Outdoors.

  2. Joe,

Thanks for the heads-up! I've had my x-country skis fixed there a couple of times, but I always thought it was over the town line in C'burg. Glad you pointed that out.

  3. I checked the town's map and the border on that side of S. Main goes up Hospital Drive -- so Back Country isn't in the town limits. But it isn't in Christiansburg, either, since the border for C'burg isn't until one gets south on 460 to Midway. So Back Country is in Montgomery County -- but I still count it as a local business. Granted, this is a small nit to pick but accuracy should always be on the top of the list of things for a good reporter to be concerned about.

  5. And here's a glimpse of the Blacksburg storefront from earlier in October. Some of you may recognize the buildout around the doors from the old Blue Ridge Outdoors store, too.

We at Blue Ridge (including former Blue Ridge Outdoors, owner, Bill Wilson--now our director of retail operations) is very excited to be coming "back" to Blacksburg.
