Shoe fundraiser Friday in Blacksburg

TOMS Shoes, a Santa Monica, Ca.-based company is sending a team to Blacksburg to help send 30,000 pairs of shoes to Ethiopia. For every pair of shoes purchased, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need in Ethiopia. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday (Dec. 5) at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church St. SE.

Decorate the shoes yourself or have the artist on site custom design your shoes.

According to a press release from the company, in Ethiopia, over 1 million people are suffering from podoconisosis. Podoconisosis is a soil-transmitted disease caused by walking barefoot in silica-rich soil. Silica is ancient volcanic glass that penetrates the skin and makes its way into the lymphatic system causing the lower legs and feet to swell and is preventable by wearing shoes.
