Blacksburg ordinance would regulate teen dance parties

A new ordinance scheduled for a Blacksburg Town Council vote on April 14 would ban teen night dance events and teen nightclubs within 500 feet of any establishment that sells alcohol. The ordinance would also establish a permitting process for holding such events.

Read the full story in Friday's (March 27) Current. Read the full text of the proposed ordinance here.

  1. According to the linked document," “teen nights” at public dance halls in the Town have resulted in numerous police calls for incidents involving disorderly conduct, drunkenness and fights..." Where is the Roanoke Times coverage of these public dance halls and fights? It sounds like a scourge!

As far as I know, there are no teen dance halls in Blacksburg, so it would be helpful to get some details on what exactly they are talking about! Perhaps it's an attempt to stamp out house parties?

  2. Actually, wondering, there have been a number of stories over the past two years about problems downtown in and around Oge-Chi's and other bars. Here are three recent ones:

  3. My daughter went to attitudes when she was about 17, it was supposed
to be TEEN night. She was approached by a man in his mid twenties
They aren't doing what they are supposed to be doing. Attitudes
shouldn't have a TEEN anything - liqour is sold within feet of this area!

  4. wgtg, just to clarify, Attitudes no longer has a teen night. I talked with the manager there, and it's been several years since they held such an event. According to Blacksburg police, the town knows of only one nightclub that hosts teen nights. That night club is Oge-Chi's on Draper Road.

  5. tonia, just to clarify, Oge-Chi's actually discontinued hosting teen nights prior to the ordinance being passed. At the time of this decision, there was no prior knowledge of an ordinance of this nature in the works.

  6. Superman, that's covered in the story about ABC revoking Oge-Chi's liquor license that ran this Saturday (April 11). It's also worth noting, the ordinance has not yet passed. The town council will vote on it Tuesday (April 14) after public comment. Meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
