Montgomery County chamber chief out amid police investigation

The head of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce has left his job amid a Blacksburg police investigation into unspecified matters at the organization, the chamber’s attorney said Tuesday.

  1. I think it's unfortunate for the members of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce that their Board of Directors has elected to take this public course of action to deal with a personnel issue. In my point of view, they have put their organization into a no-win situation. It's the board's responsibility to oversee the actions of the president of the chamber. Should an investigation uncover any questionable activities by the president, that would suggest to me that the board was either incompetent or negligent in their duties to oversee the president. On the other hand, if an investigation does not reveal any wrongdoing on the part of the president (who is reportedly one of the most respected chamber leaders in the South), I would guess the board (and by extension the organization) could be subject to legal action by the president because of wrongful accusations. If you were a member of an organization and your dues were up, would you choose to reinvest in that organization if its board of directors didn't appear to have their act together?
