Radford considers revoking JetBroadband's license

By Allison Chopin | The Roanoke Times

RADFORD — City officials are on the verge of cutting ties with their cable provider.

At Monday night’s city council meeting, officials described JetBroadband as unresponsive and owing the city nearly $50,000. Council set a public hearing Aug. 24 to consider revoking the company’s exclusive license.

When the company took over cable operations in Radford in June 2007, it failed to reach a required agreement under which it must pay the city for use of its existing utility poles and equipment, officials said.

Since then, the city has asked JetBroadband to sign the proper agreement and pay its debt, but the company has failed to comply. Although JetBroadband in May paid $6,000 of the $53,000 owned, according to city officials, city attorney Jim Guynn said Monday night that he has been unable to reach the company through e-mail.

At the Aug. 24 public hearing, JetBroadband officials will have another chance to state why it should be allowed to keep its license in Radford.

Calls to JetBroadband, which is based in Rustburg, were not returned Tuesday afternoon.

Charges of shoplifting, brandishing firearm stem from Blacksburg incident

A Christiansburg woman and a Pearisburg man were charged early Sunday morning after police say they tried to steal a case of beer and then one of them brandished a handgun at a store clerk.

Blacksburg police responded to a business in the 900 block of University City Blvd. at 5:10 a.m. for a shoplifting complaint, Lt. Joe Davis said. Davis said department policy prevents him from releasing the name of the business.

The man attempted to leave the store with a case of Bud Light as the woman he was with distracted the clerk by going to a self-checkout line, Davis said. When the clerk confronted the man and asked him to pay for the beer, the man pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it to the ground, scaring the clerk, Davis said.

The clerk described the couple and their vehicle to police, Davis said. Police arrested Joshua Lyle Martin, 24, and Doris Ann Oliver, 18.

Martin was charged with shoplifting, brandishing a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Oliver was charged with shoplifting, possession of alcohol while underage, and appearing drunk in public.
