Turn-out figures from the Roanoke and New River valleys
We can how report on exactly how heavy turnout has been at precincts in Roanoke, Roanoke County, Salem, Montgomery County and Radford.
It varies. The highest turn-out precinct was South Roanoke No. 1, where more than 50 percent of the registered voters had cast ballots by 10 a.m. The lowest turn-out precinct in Roanoke so far is Jefferson No. 1, where only about 17 percent of voters had been to the polls by that hour.
Data delivery editor Matt Chittum has put together a database of turnout around the region -- with comparisons to how those precincts voted in the 2004 and 2000 presidential races. Data is still missing for one Radford precinct.
Matt tells us:
Registrars have had difficulty gathering the turnout data because of communication problems with the precincts themselves. Precinct workers are swamped with turnout, while registrar's office phone lines are busy.
We'll continue to update the database with 3 p.m. turnout figures as they come available, and eventually with closing figures, too.
