Family member identifies shooting victims

A family member has identified the man who was fatally shot this morning.

Sarah Hicks said it was her brother-in-law, Joseph Bane, who was shot and killed outside his house on Dyer Road in the Draper community of Wythe County.

Hick's father, Jerry Covey, 61, lives nearby and heard the gunshot. He went outside to to help and was shot in the arm, Hicks said. Covey is at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in surgery, Hicks said.

After the shootings, Hicks said Douglas Albert Jaccard broke into her brother-in-law's house and set it on fire. Hicks sister, Sharon Bane, and her 14-year-old son were inside. Sharon Bane jumped from a second story window and is at Pulaski Community Hospital being treated for injuries from the fall. Hicks' nephew made it out safely.

She said that Jaccard has been troubling her family for months, and on Sunday threatened to "take care of us."

The family on Sunday notified the Wythe County Sheriff's Office about the threat, Hicks said.

  1. What a sad situation for a family just trying to live in their house. Being threatened and then being under attack by the neighbor. I hope they catch Mr. Jaccard soon so they community will not keep being alarmed.

My thoughts go out to the Bane family.

  2. This is such a sad situation for this family. I have known Joe Bane all my life, went to school with him for 12 years. He was a very kind, gentle, polite, and considerate man. I'm so sorry for the family and what they have had to deal with these past months, due to a flaw in our judicial system. The police officers are not to blame, its our court systems that have allowed this tragedy to happen. The officers can only do what is allowed by law. I know that this is so frustrating to everyone, but our lawyers, judges, and overall judicial system allowed an innocent, kind, decent man and his family to be tortured and in the end become victims to such a tragic event.

I know that Mr Jaccard will be caught in time. Our officers, and all others involved in this search need our prayers, and thoughts at this time. So do all the neighbors, and families that have been involved directly and indirectly. My heart felt sympathy goes out to you, the Bane Family. May God Bless you.
