Search expected to resume at daybreak
The search for shooting suspect Douglas Jaccard is expected to resume as soon as possible this morning.
Officers from at least 10 jurisdictions have been looking for Jaccard since just after 7 a.m. Tuesday, when he is accused of shooting and killing one neighbor on Dyer Road, shooting an injuring a second, shooting at several sheriff's deputies and setting a house on fire.
Wythe County Chief Deputy Keith Dunagan said Tuesday evening that authorities planned to search for the 58-year-old suspect "until we know that he's not out here anymore or until he is arrested."
They planned to concentrate their efforts in Wythe and Pulaski counties.
Jaccard is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs about 170 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call 911.

they lost the scent on him last nite near a fork in the river...could he have gone into the water...or God forbid stolen a car or carjacked someone? how does a scent trail just stop? is there a way to do that?
was he going to be taken to jail after the court apperance he was scheduled for today? sounds to me like he planned to do this and go on the run. bad news.

Say, here's an idea...
I have seen 2 photos of the guy on this blog, one with a beard and one without. How about telling us if the chap is sporting a beard or not???

Hey marked man, they are giving you a description of both they think he may have altered his appearance. It's really not that hard to figure out if you think about it

It is sad that this individual has taken a life and then of all things shoot 2 other people! Our system needs a major overhaul and that should have been done after Marvo and Cho...But instead we continue to deal with this on a daily basis of our judges, bailbonds people, law enforcement, etc allowing criminals freedom to walk on our streets and do as they wish! A family, friends go without a father, brother, uncle, friend and never again will they see the victim! However, when this man is finally caught he will be seen over and over again by the media exposing his face on newspapers and television! I personally hope that we do not have to see that face over and over again in the news for that feeds many like him who need more to fixate on!

its trash like this that makes it hard on law abiding citazens to own firearms and i would like to point out to bev that when a person commits a crime of this nature he will not get a bond and therefore cannot be bonded out

Its sad that the local news is not keeping residents in the area up to date. I did not see the 9 am news yesterday and were it not for Fox national News I would not have even known this was happening. Guess those stations in Roanoke only think stuff is important if its happening in the city or at VT. I live on the river about 3 miles south of all of this and have not seen one cop come down my road or through my woods. We are hostages in our own community! Catch this guy so I can sleep at night!

Sounds to me like those that are searching for him don't know their butts from a hole in the ground. Call in people that can actually get the job done and stop fooling with the Wythe County Police. I doubt very seriously if this guy is going to make it to court. Chances are he will kill himself rather than face all of the charges against him. If not, I am sure one of the trigger happy deputy's will shoot him when they actually do find him, if they actually do find him. It is not a comforting feeling knowing that our police can't catch someone they had 50 foot in front of them..

Hey Chris, I guess your from that area, and since you are and the police there are so worthless, why dont you go catch the bad guy. If your not willing to, then dont bash the ones that are putting their lives on the line.

This is so tragic. We have already lost a valuable member of society, Joe Bane, a very kind, decent, hard working man who loved his family and friends, and can't afford to lose anymore of these fine people. All of our law enforement is putting their lives on the line to find this "freak of society", so that everyone can feel at the very least relieved that he is no longer out there. These officers can only do what the court system allows. They are not the ones that allowed him a bond, nor are they the ones that let him out.
The terrain in that area is very rugged, and hard to get over. These men and women that are hunting for him, are putting their lives on the line for US. Trying to keep us safe. They too, are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, etc. Please keep them in your prayers. My brother has been there hunting, and will resume there tomorrow. I pray the Lord will keep him and all the others safe. I'm so sorry that The Bane family lost a wonderful husband, father, son-in-law, friend, etc. Im sure that you all feel as if the entire system ,judicial, etc let you down, and I feel that they did as well. For now, we must remember that we all need to focus on getting this "Crazy" off the street and behind bars where he needs to be, before he hurts some other innocent family member.

Well gee Fred, they took the trouble to tell us he has brown hair right? So along your lines of thinking, by now he probably has blonde hair since they announced his hair color?!? Nice logic there...
Anyway, the point is, while the trail was still fresh for this guy they could have told us whether he was wearing a beard or not (thats a pretty significant beard and if i saw him walking down the road i would have done a double take looking at someone with an untrimmed beard such as he has/had). Alas, if he is walking up the river, hiding up a tree, or stowed away in one of those caves nearby, i doubt he will be coloring his hair or shaving with a sharp rock.
Its not that complicated if you really think about it.

Chris,
If you could do such a great job, are familiar with the area, and are willing to help, why didn't you catch this guy? Over 200 police officers, many not even from Wythe County left their families at home, to risk their lives hunting for this man. Hell, the deputy that got shot was from the Pulaski Sheriff’s Office. How about a little gratitude. Officers knew that if he was hiding in the woods with a gun he would have likely gotten the first shot off, i.e., one of them would get shot. They went anyway. They put their butts on the line and all you can do is criticize. Get a life.
