Analysis: A closer look at McDonnell's lead

Bob McDonnell is ahead.

On the other hand, most of the places reporting so far are rural localities in the Republican heartland, mostly in Southside.

However, here's the telling thing: In all the precincts I've looked at so far, McDonnell is running well ahead of how Jerry Kilgore did four years ago.

Which, of course, is what he needs to do to win.

Just one case in point: The Glenvar precinct in Roanoke County. Kilgore took almost 59 percent of the vote there. Tonight, McDonnell is polling 69 percent there.

We'll want to see some more numbers before actually calling this race, but, well, right now everything is pointing McDonnell's way.
