From the Newsroom

New sports editor

Steve Hemphill started as sports editor today. Hemphill came to The Roanoke Times as an assistant sports editor in 2004 after serving as sports editor at the Longmont Daily Times-Call in Colorado. He's a graduate of Colorado State University.

Hemphill replaces Jeff Gilbert, who is returning to his alma mater, Cedarville University, to teach journalism.

  1. Welcome, Steve. I'm writing to agree with a recent letter to the editor on the Roanoke Time's coverage of sports. Roanoke's circulation area includes more than just Virginia Tech and UVa. As the parent of a field hockey player at Roanoke College, I'd love to read about the college's sports as well as other college sports in the area. Providing local news that cannot be found elsewhere --therein lies the future of the daily newspapers that will survive this ongoing crisis. Thank you.
