Hokies eliminated in NCAA softball

Mark Berman back here in Columbus, Ohio, where the Virginia Tech softball team was eliminated from the NCAA regionals with a 1-0 loss to Cal State-Fullerton on Saturday.
Tech, which had lost to Ohio State 2-1 earlier Saturday, went 1-2 in the regionals for the third straight year.
"I was hoping it would happen this year," coach Scot Thomas said. "That's what what we were kind of looking at, hoping to make it to the Sweet 16 [the super regionals]. If you get in that three-game series scenario [in the super reigonals] with Angela, you've got a good shot to maybe make it to Oklahoma [and the World Series]
"But if you don't hit the ball and don't get bunts down, that's not going to happen."
Tincher served up a home run to Fullerton's pitcher, Candice Baker, in the sixth inning. It was just the second home run of the year by Baker. It was only the ninth homer TIncher allowed this year. Tincher had a no-hitter going until the homer, and finished with a two-hitter. Baker threw a four-hitter.
Tech wasted scoring chances in the second and sixth innings. After leaving seven runners on base in the OSU game, Tech stranded five more in the Fullerton game. Tech failed time and time again when it came to getting a clutch hit.
Tech had hoped this would finally be the year it won a regional. It was the top seed in a regional for the first time, and a national seed (no. 16) for the first time. Tincher was pain-free in the postseason for the first time.
But the season again ended with a loss in the losers' bracket final.
"I felt like we had what it was going to take to get through to tomorrow," Thomas said. "We had the type of kids who can get us to Sunday."
Tech does return Tincher and all of its regulars but Callie Rhodes next year.
