UVa-State report #16

State beat Virginia at its own game, outgaining the Cavaliers 115-32 in the final quarter. The best news for UVa is that quarterback Jameel Sewell did not have a sprained ankle, as originally suspected, but was sidelined by cramps.

Peter Lalich might have been ready for the assignment he got Saturday if this had been Week 3 or 4, but this should quiet some of the quarterback controversy.

Hitting the road. More thoughts tomorrow. Maybe.

UVa-State report #15

Sewell limps off with 7:09 left. Peter Lalich comes in. Misses his first four attempts. Second consecutive three-and-out has the Cavaliers punting with 4:15 left.

Weigand hooks it OB at the State 35.

This is dire even by UVa standards.

Evans to Bowens again, beating Dowling for 28 yards.

UVa sure could have used this guy.

Looks like this one is over.

UVa-State report #14

Donald Bowens, who picked State over UVa in his recruiting, has now caught his second TD pass to give the Wolfies a 29-24 lead with 7:37 remaining. Two-point conversion attempt misses.

Ras-I Dowling is beaten for back-to-back 30-yard receptions.

Huge play that will be overlooked was a fumble recovery by UVa following the touchdown that made it 24-23. True freshman Jared Detrick was offside and the Cavaliers had to kick over.

UVa-State report #13

In game 9, Ras-I Dowling gets theb first INT by a UVa cornerback this season but Cavs have to punt from 33. State takes over at its 40 following a 17-yard Darrell Blackman return. Time remaining: 8:37.

UVa-State report #12

Mikell Simpson scores from the 5 with 13:12 remaining to make it 24-23.

Stats after three quarters:

Total offense -- Virginia 337, State 316

Sewell -- 22 of 39 for 247 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

Evans -- 19 of 36 for 240 yards, 2 TDs

Mikell Simpson -- 16-67 rushing, 3-31 receiving

State WR Donald Bowens --- 9-144, 1 TD

UVa CB Ras-I Dowling -- school record-tying 5 pass break-ups

UVa-State report #11

Virginia's preseason goal was 36-36. That's 36 turnovers forced and 36 sacks. In other words, there of each per game.

Midway through the third quarter, it's zero-zero.

Finally, Clint Sintim gets Daniel Evans with 7:37 left in the third quarter.

Cavs took over at their 43 after a 47-yard Bradley Person punt.

UVa-State report #10

What is with Virginia's defense?

After giving up 64 yards in the second half against Maryland, the Cavs give up 223 yards in the first half against N.C. State, which then marches down the field on the first possession of the second half to extend its lead to 23-17 on Steven Hauschka's third field goal.

Actually, Cavs luck out when Jamelle Eugene stumbles and falls in the open at the 2-yard line. A false start moves the Wolfies back to the 7 and the drive stalls.

Halftime stats:

Total offense -- Virginia 272, State 223

Quarterbacks -- Jameel Sewell 18-30-2-217, 2 TDs; Daniel Evans 14-25-0-195, 2 TDs.

Sewell in the second quarter: 13-of-21 for 165 yards and two TDs.

UVa-State report #9

State goes 75 yards in five plays and 1:31 to make it 20-10 with 1:31 remaining in the first half.

State doesn't even have its best receiver, Jon Dunlap, out with an injury.

UVa's secondary is a mess and the pass rush has been nonexistent.
