Avalanche gets closer
Houston released Salem reliever Josh Appell and brought up closer Jay Pacella from Lexington on Monday.
Pacella, a 6-foot-6, 212-pound right-hander from Powell, Ohio, went 1-4 with a 3.02 ERA and 12 saves in the South Atlantic League. He struck out 73 and walked 21 in 59 2/3 innings.
Appell, a 25-year-old lefty, went 1-2 with a 5.96 in 44 appearances for the Avalanche this season.
Appell is the fifth player the Houston Astros have released outright from the Avalanche roster this season.

The way this team has played all year there are probably others who need to go too.
Worst team in Salem history. Hopefully the new owners will put their Class A team here next year!

Believe or not the 1982 Salem Redbirds went 39-101 and the 1986 Redbirds went 45-93. The Avalanche was 50-74 with 16 games left. So technically not the worst team in Salem history, though that probably doesn't really help at all.

We all need to remember Class A is principally a developmental league for the major league team. Winning here is nice but not the big team's primary focus.
