Astros honor Ori
The Houston Astros named Mark Ori the MVP of the 2008 Salem Avalanche season, despite his arrest on a disorderly conduct chage on the final weekend of the season. Ori goes to court on that charge on Dec. 2.
Ori ranked third in the Carolina League in hitting (.304) and RBIs (89) and made the postseason all-star team as utility infielder. Ori also had 36 doubles and 11 homers for the Avalanche. His 89 RBIs were the best in the Astros' minor league system.
2008 marked the sixth and final season for the Astros as the Avalanche's major-league affiliate. Fenway Sports Group, sister company of the Boston Red Sox, bought the team this summer and is expected to install the Red Sox's high-A affiliate beginning next season.
Former Avalanche players Mark Saccomanno and Drew Sutton also were honored by the Astros. Saccamanno was named the MVP for triple-A Round Rock, hitting .297 with 33 doubles, 27 homers and 84 RBIs, and was called up to Houston.
Sutton was named MVP for double-A Corpus Christi, hitting .317 with 36 doubles, four triples, 20 homers, 69 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.
