Cavs' Kellum out for season

Paulisha Kellum, charged with replacing Sharnee Zoll at point guard for the Virginia women's basketball team, has been lost for the season with a torn ACL in right knee, the school announced Thursday.

"This is a tremendous loss for our program," coach Debbie Ryan said in a news release.

The Cavaliers were picked to finished fourth in the ACC in the league's preseason media poll.

Kellum started at the 2 guard spot in 31 of 33 games last season, averaging 9 points and 3.2 assists a game.

Ryan said this fall the 5-foot-8 junior from Upper Marlboro, Md., was the leading candidate to fill the role of point guard, along with freshman Ariana Moorer, of Woodbridge, and senior Britnee Millner, of Martinsville.

According to the news release, Kellum was injured in a scrimmage against George Mason on Saturday and the extent of the injury was revealed by an MRI on Tuesday.

"I know Paulisha will come back as strong as ever and of course we will see her through every step of the way," Ryan said in the release.

VHSL, VIS playoff points: Through Oct. 27

NOTE: VHSL (public schools) points determine at-large playoff berths and seedings for regional football playoffs. District champions automatically qualify. In the event of a tie for a district title, the Rating Scale serves as the tie-breaker unless a district has worked out its own tie-breaker procedure. VIS (private schools) points solely determine which teams make the playoffs and the seedings. There are no automatic VIS playoff qualifiers.

College football races begin to take shape

This is the time of year where the college football world begins to fall into place. The ACC has three games -- Virginia Tech at Florida State, Virginia at Georgia Tech, Boston College at North Carolina -- that will all but eliminate the loser from the conference race. And all of them could easily go either way. The same is true in other conferences. The Big Ten battle between Penn State and Ohio State is seen as the conference title game. Texas-Oklahoma State and Kansas-Texas Tech has major implications on the Big 12 race. LSU needs to beat Georgia in the SEC to stay close to Alabama. In the Pac-10, USC is the clear favorite but Arizona could upset those plans. And the results of three games will begin to clear up the Big East, not that the Big East race matters in the national championship picture. The same can be said for the ACC. But to those who care, the games still mean a lot. -- Jeff Gilbert

Virginia's Wright honored by ACC

Virginia's Monica Wright was named to the preseason ACC women's basketball team, announced today in Greensboro.

Maryland's Kristi Toliver was named the preseason player of the year and the Terps' Lynetta Kizer was the rookie of the year.

Wright and Toliver along with Duke's Chante Black, North Carolina's Rashanda McCants and Maryland's Marissa Coleman made up the preseason all-ACC women's team, as determined by a panel of local and national media and school representatives.

North Carolina was picked to repeat as league champion, followed by Maryland and Duke.

Virginia was picked to finish fourth. Virginia Tech 10th.

Coach Beth Dunkenberger said Barbour is in good academic standing and said she hopes the
5-foot-10 sophomore from Charlottesville will remain in school through the end of the semester and then transfer to someplace "where she can get a fresh start."

Barbour averaged 15.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in 26 games.
