Sean Glennon has been sacked 4 times in the 2nd half.

Lewis injured in 3rd quarter

Virginia Tech's Darren Evans scored on a 2-yard run to extend the lead to 27-3 with 10:39 left in the third. The bad news on the drive was that Kenny Lews Jr suffered a ruptured left Achilles, a serious injury that will likely end his season.

Tech had scored with one second left in the first half to extend the lead to 20-3. Macho Harris picked off a pass and returned it 49 yards to the WK 5, setting up a Dustin Keys 22-yard field goal.

Sean Glennon is going in at QB with less than nine minutes left in the third.

Hokies up 17-3

Virginia Tech has extended its lead to 17-3. Darren Evans dove into the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 25 seconds left in the first half. Macho Harris' 32-yard punt return enabled Tech to start the drive at the WK 38.

Tech had not impressed on its previous two series. One of those ended with Tyrod Taylor fumbling the ball away at the WK 11.

Hokies lead WKU 10-3

Mark Berman here in Blacksburg, where there will be no shutout at Lane Stadium. Virginia Tech leads Western Kentucky 10-3 early in the second quarter.

The Hokies had first-and-goal from the WK 8 in their first drive, but two penalties and a sack pushed them back. They settled for a 27-yard Dustin Keys field goal for a 3-0 lead.

Tyrod Taylor found Greg Boone in the end zone for a 27-yard TD pass to extend the lead to 10-0 late in the first quarter.

The Hokies were fooled by a fake punt. It looked like the pass would go for a TD, but an illegal block in the back nullified the TD. WKU still kept the ball but instead moved up to the VT 29 instead of scoring, and the drive fizzled. A 48-yard FG cut the lead to 10-3.

Saunders to make VT history

Joe Saunders will make Virginia Tech history Sunday when he takes the mound for the Los Angeles Angels in Game 3 of their American League Division Series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Saunders will become the first ex-Hokie pitcher to start a postseason game in the majors. Brad Clontz pitched in the playoffs for the Braves in 1995 and 1996 and Mike Williams did so for the Astros in 2001, but those were relief appearances. This will be the first time Saunders, who was 17-7 in the regular season, has ever pitched in the postseason. He passed a kidney stone last week that had caused him to miss a start (and lose eight pounds as he waited for it to pass). I hope he does well — but not too well. I’m a Red Sox fan. — Mark Berman

L.A. Times mocks UVa

Steve Harvey of the Los Angeles Times writes a weekly piece in which he ranks the worst 10 teams in college football. This week, he has Troy at No. 10 and Syracuse at No. 9. Florida International checks in at No. 8, and he rates San Diego State No. 7. He’s got Tennessee at No. 6, Hawaii at No. 5 and Idaho at No. 4. He ranks Washington State No. 3 and winless Washington at No. 2. And who does Harvey judge to be the worst team? His new No. 1 is none other than Virginia. “Imagine a school bad enough to lose to Duke and USC in the same season,” Harvey writes. It will be interesting to see if the Cavs can play their way out of the top spot — or should that be the bottom spot? — Mark Berman
