Cavs win tuneup without Littles

Monica Wright and Aisha Mohammed scored 27 points apiece as the Virginia women's basketball scored a 91-77 win over DT3 in a preseason exhibition game on Friday at the John Paul Jones Arena. But forward Lyndra Littles sat on the bench in street clothes.
Coach Debbie Ryan said Littles, Virginia's second leading scorer and rebounder last season, was out for "personal reasons," and said she did know how long she would be out of action.
Guard Kristen London also sat out for "disciplinary reasons," Ryan said, and would be out for "several games."
Wright had 10 rebounds and six assists. Mohammed had six rebounds.

Big South hoops picks confusing

Guess who is expected to win the Big South men’s basketball title? The Sporting News picks Radford, which has five starters back, albeit from a 10-20 team. That magazine picks VMI to finish eighth in the 10-team league. But wait. Lindy’s picks VMI to win the league, even though Reggie Williams is now playing in France. Lindy’s picks RU to finish second. But wait. Athlon picks defending champ Winthrop, even though the Eagles return just two starters. Athlon picks Radford third and VMI ninth. The Big South poll also puts Winthrop at No. 1, with RU second and VMI seventh. In other words, who knows?

Life after Muscaro remains good for North Cross

When North Cross coach Jim Muscaro decided to hang up his whistle after the 2005-06 basketball season, many in Raiders circles wondered how their athletic teams would recover from such a blow. Replacing an institution like Muscaro — who not only served as the athletic director and head football and basketball coach of the Roanoke County private school for 35 years, but drove the team bus to away games as well — was a staggering proposition. How do you even begin to replace a legend who won a combined 727 basketball and football games? You don’t, right? Wrong. It’s only two years post-Muscaro, but the Raiders are thriving. Last year’s 24-8 basketball team finished second in the state VIS Division III tournament and returns all but one player. The football team just wrapped up its regular season with nine straight decisive wins, including Friday’s steamrolling of Roanoke Catholic. It’s fair to say coaches Joe Lambert (basketball) and Lee Johnson (football) — as well as a few well-placed transfer players — have so far accomplished what two years ago seemed impossible. Could be, though, that building off of success is a much easier task than truly starting anew.
