UVa women on CSN Plus

The women's basketball game tonight between Virginia and host Clemson will be on CSN Plus (the CSN overflow channel).

The game was not supposed to be televised orginally. The CSN Plus game tonight was supposed to be N.C. State at Wake Forest. But that game was postponed because of the death of State coach Kay Yow, so the UVa game will be televised instead.

All-state QB commits to Keydets

Adam Morgan, the first-team All-Group AAA quarterback and the holder of five state passing records, made an oral commitment to play for VMI on Wednesdaty night.

Morgan (6 feet, 200 pounds) passed for 3,499 yards and 48 touchdowns as a senior at Dinwiddie High School, which played in the Group AAA Division 5 championship game.

Morgan is rated the No. 64 prospect in Virginia by The Roanoke Times.

Time for the Favre watch to begin

Rex Ryan, the son of Buddy Ryan, was introduced as the New York Jets’ head coach Wednesday and proclaimed that his team will "want to be known as the most physical football team in the NFL." That’s original. He also said anybody would like to have Brett Favre as their quarterback. The question is will he? And will Favre want to play another season. Now that Favre knows who the coach is, the will-he-or-won’t-he-play-again soap opera is bound to begin soon. Good luck trying to figure that one out. Favre is a difficult to read. It will depend on how his first meeting with Ryan goes. And he still might change his mind in July. — Jeff Gilbert

Maryland coach is right

Maryland's Gary Williams complained on the ACC coaches teleconference Monday (befire the new polls come out) that there have not been enough ACC teams in the Top 25 men's basketball polls. He was right. Last week only four ACC teams were ranked. This week there are five, with Boston College joining the Top 25 after knocking off UNC. Good for BC; I did put the Eagles in my Associated Press ballot Monday. But why isn't Maryland ranked as well? I have been putting the Terps on my ballot for weeks. They have beaten Michigan and Michigan State, and have lost only to Georgetown and Gonzaga. Meanwhile, who has Louisville beaten? Or Villanova? Or UCLA? Maryland is more deserving than any of those teams. Six ACC teams should be ranked. -- Mark Berman

BCS win is nice, but ACC still climbing uphill

Like most of my football predictions I was wrong when I said the ACC would go 5-5 in bowl season. They did even worse at 4-6. Wins over Navy, Nevada, Wisconsin and Cincinnati aren't big resume builders. Virginia Tech helped the league with a BCS win, but it pales against West Virginia's wins over Georgia and Oklahoma the past two years. The final numbers against other BCS leagues are 13-8 in the regular season and 2-6 in the bowls. Virginia Tech will be the heavy preseason favorite next year, which is good for the league. But until Florida State and Miami become major players again and another team steps forward (maybe North Carolina), the ACC's image will be what it is. -- Jeff Gilbert
