Radford boys lose in Group A soccer final

RADFORD -- Junior forward Nick Smirniotopolous' goal early supplied the game's only score as George Mason edged Radford 1-0 in the VHSL Group A boys soccer championship game Sunday afternoon at Radford University's Cupp Stadium.

The loss ended the Bobcats' dream of becoming the first team to win a third consecutive Group title. Radford, which averaged nearly five goals a game in its first 21 games, managed only four shots on goal.

It was the fourth state title for the Mustangs (20-2).

  1. Little lesson on counting chickens before they hatch.

"Hey, George Mason is a great team. Today, though, was the first time I saw them play. I've heard good things about Mason and I watched them today. They were good, but they're not as good as I thought they were."

Greg Wade basically echoed that thought. In fact, the Bobcats' coach sounded like a guy who already feels like the majority of the hay has been stacked in his team's barn.
