Radford boys lose in Group A soccer final

RADFORD -- Junior forward Nick Smirniotopolous' goal early supplied the game's only score as George Mason edged Radford 1-0 in the VHSL Group A boys soccer championship game Sunday afternoon at Radford University's Cupp Stadium.

The loss ended the Bobcats' dream of becoming the first team to win a third consecutive Group title. Radford, which averaged nearly five goals a game in its first 21 games, managed only four shots on goal.

It was the fourth state title for the Mustangs (20-2).

Sox rained out; roster switch

FREDERICK, Md. — Salem’s Carolina League game against the Frederick Keys was rained out on Thursday and was rescheduled to be played as part of a doubleheader Friday beginning at 5 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium.

In a roster swap, the Red Sox brought back starter Eammon Portice (2-3, 4.73 ERA) and put starter Kyle Weiland (1-5, 6.19) on the Lowell roster. Lowell is a shortseason-A team which will not start play until June 19, so its roster has become a handy repository as the Boston organization juggles extra players.

Roster shake up

The Boston Red Sox have released Salem utility infielder Zak Farkes, who was hitting .226 and had nine errors in 34 games. In return, Salem got middle infielder Zach Borowiak.

Borowiak has hit .217 but committed just four errors playing second, third and shortstop at for double-A Portland this season.

Boston also put young Salem reliever Jose Alvarez (1-1, 4.74) on the Lowell roster and sent him to the extended spring training complex in Fort Myers, Fla.

Josh Papelbon (3-1, 4.98 ERA) was added back from the disabled list.
