Michael Vick reinstated by NFL

NEW YORK - Michael Vick was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday and could play in regular season games as early as October.

Vick can immediately participate in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games - if he can find a team that will sign him. A number of teams have already said they would not.

Thoughts?

Navarro promoted

Salem shortstop Yamaico Navarro Navarro has been promoted to double-A Portland, the team announced Wednesday. Infielder Jon Hee has been brought back up from low-A Greenville to fill Navarro's spot on the Salem roster.

The Boston Globe reported on its website, boston.com, that Portland shortstop Argenis Diaz and Greenville pitcher Hunter Strickland were the prospects that the Boston Red Sox sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Adam LaRoche.

Navarro hit .319 with nine doubles, four homers and 17 RBIs in 23 games with Salem. He missed most of the first half with a wrist injury.

Hee hit .233 in 43 games with Salem, playing second and third base between May 1 and June 21 when he was sent back down to Greenville.  He has hit under .200 (9-for-49) since returning to the Drive.

Quick Thought: July 20

Michael Vick’s 23-month sentence for running a dog-fighting ring ends today.

Next will be a meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as Goodell wants to judge Vick’s contrition for his misdeeds for himself. Whatever the outcome of the meeting, Vick should be reinstated to the NFL immediately. He’s served his time, suffered public humiliation and will never command the salary he once did.

But he deserves the chance to make a living at his chosen profession if there is a franchise willing to take a chance on him. And there will be. What Vick did was heinous, but he didn’t kill anyone like Donte’ Stallworth pleaded guilty to doing in his DUI manslaughter case, and it hasn’t been suggested that Stallworth not be able to return to the NFL.

Vick hasn’t habitually been in trouble with the law like Pacman Jones and how many times has Jones returned to the league?

McKae activated, Weiland on DL

Salem placed starter Kyle Weiland on the disabled list, retroactive to July 11, and activated Dave McKae from the DL on Tuesday.

Former Avalanche player Figgins now an All-Star

The Associated Press reported that Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria is out of the American League starting lineup for the All-Star game because of an infected right ring finger and is being replace by Chone Figgins, who played for the Salem Avalanche when he was a member of the Colorado Rockies organization.
Longoria is being replaced in the starting lineup for tonight's game by Texas third baseman Michael Young, who will bat seventh.
Young is a six-time All-Star who will be making his first start. He is batting .308 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs this season.
Figgins, of the Los Angeles Angels, is a first-time All-Star, is hitting .310 with one homer, 28 RBIs and an AL-leading 68 runs.

Miller promoted, Salem gets 2

Reliever Ryne Miller was promoted to double-A Portland on Sunday, and the Salem Red Sox got starter Stephen Fife (0-3, 2.70 ERA) and reliever Armando Zerpa (1-0, 1.20) from low-A Greenville.

Fife, a right-hander, walked four batters and struck out 25 in eight starts. He replaces Casey Kelly, who after Sunday's Futures Game, embarks on his career as a shortstop and has been transferred to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox roster.

Zerpa, a lefty, had three saves for the Drive.

Place moves up

Jason Place, the Boston Red Sox's first pick in the 2006 draft, moved up from Salem to double-A Portland on Friday.

Place hit .252 with 24 doubles, three triples and four homers in 76 games for Salem. He drove in a team-high 48 runs.

Daniel Nava came off the disabled list to replace Place on the Salem roster. Nava went 9-for-22 in six games after spending most of the first half in extended spring training with abdominal injuries.
