Cook out for season

Brittany Cook has torn the ACL in her right knee and will miss the entire season, Virginia Tech coach Beth Dunkenberger said Thursday. Cook was the ACC's leading scorer last season.

"My heart aches for her and her teammates feel so bad for her," Dunkenberger said. "Obviously you'll miss the leading scorer in the ACC, but right now everybody wants to step up. She said she's going to be there for them. She told them how much she believes in them and they all want to prove that all of this hard work is going to pay off."

Initially doctors thought the injury was just a sprain, but the ACL tear was revealed in an MRI late Wednesday,Dunkenberger said. Cook will have surgery to repair the tear next week.

More on Hadley

Porschia Hadley said she picked Virginia Tech over Clemson, Maryland and South Carolina because of "the family atmosphere and the people there are really nice."

She said she liked the players she met on her visit to campus, likes coach Beth Dunkenberger and, since she plans to one day be a pediatrician, is impressed with the university's biology department.

Hadley, a 6-foot-3 post who averaged 22.6 points and 18.6 rebounds a game for Macon Co. High School, is a three-time all-state pick in Georgia and played AAU with the Georgia Metros this year.

She said she expects to play either 4 or 5 for the Hokies beginning in 2009.

"I think I can come in as a freshman and make an impact," Hadley said.

Abby Redick commits to Virginia Tech

Abby Redick went to the beach last week and came back a Hokie. She said Sunday night that she committed to Virginia Tech on Saturday after spending the week with her family at Isle of Palms in South Carolina.

The rising senior at Hidden Valley High School in Roanoke said she likes the university, the students, the basketball program, staff etc. ... also that it is close enough to home that she can get there if she wants to but far enough to feel a little independence too.

Redick, a forward for the two-time defending Group AA champion Titans, said she is having surgery to repair a torn ACL on Thursday.

Redick said the first thing the Hokies coaches said to her when they found out she had torn her ACL was "we still want you to be part of our family."

The Hokies also got a verbal commitment from forward Porschia Hadley, twice named to Georgia’a AA all-state team by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hadley, a 6-3 rising senior at Macon County High School in Montezuma, Ga., averaged 22.6 points and 18.3 rebounds a game last season.
