Drew Weaver discusses his tee shot on the 13th hole Friday at the U.S. Open with his caddie C. Damian Velaquez

Former Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver shot a 1-under-par 69 Friday morning and shared the lead for a while at the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y.

When play concluded on the course Friday, Weaver was tied for 12th place. The amateur is tied with Phil Mickelson, David Duval and two others at 1-under. Lucas Glover leads at 6-under.

Some golfers -- including the top 11, Mickelson and Glover -- played part of the second round Friday. But Weaver won't tee off for his second round until 9:11 a.m. Saturday. NBC will begin its telecast at 10 a.m.

It's too bad that Weaver finished his first round Friday morning, because the golf course became easier to play as the day wore on.

Of the 25 players who shot par or better in the first round, only seven came from the first wave of tee times. Graeme McDowell and Weaver were the only early starters to break par. The course played almost two strokes harder in the morning — averaging 74.8 to 72.9 for the afternoon players.

Weaver, who played in the 2008 Masters, was  2-over through 10 holes Thursday when play was suspended by rain.

On Friday, he made birdies on the par-5 13th, par-4 16th and par-3 17th holes. His round consisted of five birdies and four bogeys, including three straight on holes five through seven. He needed only 21 putts.

Weaver recently finished his collegiate career with a 12th-place finish in an NCAA regional tournament.

For an interview with Weaver about his round, read the newspaper Saturday or read the story online Saturday.
