Hidden Valley 50, Staunton River 41

GROUP AA DIVISION 4 GIRLS

Kayla Osborne scored 16 points as Hidden Valley defeated Staunton River 50-41 on Saturday at Salem Civic Center to reach a state semifinal for the fourth straight year.

Hidden Valley (17-11) will play Turner Ashby in a semifinal at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at VCU's Siegel Center. The Titans won the last two full Group AA titles and were runners-up in 2006.

Abby Redick had seven points, three assists and five steals in 23 minutes for Hidden Valley. Shaniesha Robinson led Staunton River (21-5) with 11 points. Laquaksha Robinsonn had eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Salem 68, Spotswood 54

Jerome Hairston scored 17 points to lead Salem while Reggie Barnette added 13, Travis McDaniel scored 11 and Stephen Barnette notched 10 as the Spartans knocked off Spotswood 68-54 in the Group AA Division 4 quarterfinals at James Madison University Convocation Center.

The Trailblazers had only lost once this season and were ranked No. 1 among AA schools by the Associated Press. The first quarter was tight but a 14-0 run in the second broke the game open and Salem (17-10) never lost its double-digit lead. Marlon Organ led Spotswood (24-2) with 16 points.

Floyd County 63, Honaker 41

Four Floyd County players scored in double figures and the Buffaloes forced 31 turnovers in an impressive, 63-41, win over Honaker in the Group A, Division 2 quarterfinals Saturday at Virginia High School.
Foul trouble and Honaker's defense held Brittany Avancini, the 2008 Group A Player of the Year, to two points in the first half. Carmen Bolt, Brittany Bourne and Brandy Phillips picked up the slack for the Buffaloes' leading scorer.
Threes from Bourne and Phillips keyed a 10-2 run as Floyd County (25-3) took a 24-18 halftime lead. Phillips canned three consecutive shots and Emily Thompson drained a 3-pointer in a 9-0 run that extended the Floyd advantage to 35-21 by the 3:52 mark of the third quarter.

Turner Ashby 54, Blacksburg 38

Kirby Burkholder scored 20 points to lead Turner Ashby (26-1) past Blacksburg 54-38 in the Group AA Division 4 quarterfinals at James Madison University Convocation Center.

Cassidy Burkholder scored 12 points and Nikki Newman added 10 for the Knights. The Bruins (19-9) couldn't beat the press early and had problems defending Kirby Burkholder all game.

Katy Kipps and Mallory Jones led Blacksburg with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

VHSL considers semifinal schedule change

The Virginia High School is considering earlier tipoff times for four state tournament semifinal basketball games Wednesday to help with crowd control at VCU's Siegel Center.

VHSL executive director Ken Tilley said the six games would be divided into two sessions, with the arena to be cleared after William Fleming's Group AAA boys semifinal.

The new schedule for Wednesday -- expected to be finalized Sunday-- would be as follows:

Group AA Division 4 girls -- Hidden Valley-Staunton River winner vs. Turner Ashby, 10:30 a.m.
Group AA Division 4 boys -- Hidden Valley-William Byrd winner vs. Spotswood-Salem winner, 12:15 a.m.
Group AAA girls -- Forest Park-Lake Taylor winner vs. Oakton-Atlee winner, 2 p.m.
Group AAA boys -- William Fleming vs. T.C. Williams-John Marshall winner, 3:45 p.m.
Group AAA girls -- Cosby vs. Princess Anne-Stonewall Jackson winner, 7 p.m.
Group AAA boys -- Petersburg vs. King's Fork, 9 p.m.

William Fleming 54, Booker T. Washington 53

GROUP AAA BOYS

William Fleming's Shaquan Manning blocked a shot by Marese Phelps under the basket with 1.6 seconds to play as the Colonels held on for a 54-53 quarterfinal victory Saturday over Booker T. Washington at Salem Civic Center.

Jamelle Hagins scored 15 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots for Fleming (24-4), which will play a semifinal game against either T.C. Williams or John Marshall at 5 p.m. Wednesday at VCU's Siegel Center.

Stephon Anderson added 15 points for Fleming, while Troy Daniels scored 13.

Booker T. Washington (19-7) was led by Desmond Lee with 15 points. Lee was called for an offensive foul with 11.1 seconds remaining, nullifying a basket. Lamar Little had 13 rebounds for the Fighting Bookers.

Narrows 52, Council 36

GROUP A DIVISION 1 GIRLS

BRISTOL -- Cameron Snidow came off the bench to score 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Narrows shut down Council 52-36 on Saturday in a quarterfinal at Virginia High School.
Narrows (19-9) will match up with Mountain Empire District rival Bland County for the fifth time this year in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Thursday at VCU's Siegel Center.

Narrows (19-9) opened the game on a 16-3 run. The Green Wave held Council (24-4) scoreless for the first 3:36 of the first half, and the first 4:22 of the second half, when a 13-0 run extended their lead to 33-17 with 3:59 left in the third quarter.

Council's leading scorer, Stephanie Cornett, scored 17 points on 4-of-17 shooting. The Cobras lost their third-leading scorer, and one of its best all-around players, Dakota Bostic, to a knee injury in the first quarter Bostic did not return.

Bland County 48, J.I. Burton 32

GROUP A DIVISION 1 GIRLS

Morgan Brizendine sparked a 13-0 run early in the fourth quarter and Bland County reached the state semifinals for the second straight year with a 48-32 quarterfinal victory over J.I. Burton at Salem Civic Center.

Brizendine finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for Bland County (21-6), which plays either Council or Narrows at VCU's Siegel Center at 3 p.m. Thursday. Laurel Hankins led the Bears in scoring with 12 points.

J.I. Burton (23-5) got 13 points and 14 rebounds from sophomore Ra'Shelle Miller, who picked up three fouls in the first half. The Black Raiders cut a 27-18 halftime deficit to 33-30 before Bland County put the game away. Burton was 0-for-15 on 3-point goals and 13-for-53 overall.

Cave Spring 55, Brookville 41

Josh Henderson had 16 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocked shots and Mark Overstreet scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as well as helping defend Brookville standout Logan Thomas as Cave Spring beat Brookville 55-41 in the VHSL Group AA Division 3 quarterfinals Friday at Salem Civic Center.

The Knights (24-6)advance to their first state semifinal since the 2002-03 season and will face the winner of today's Liberty-Marion game, at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Siegel Center.

Thomas, the Virginia Tech football signee, was limited to six second half points and finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He made three of 17 shots and the Bees were limited to 30.4 percent shooting for the game.

Henderson and Overstreet, both juniors, were a combined 13-for-18. Overstreet missed one of seven shots and was the one player for either team who never left the floor.
