WOMEN’S SOCCER
Virginia Tech won’t get to play at home in the NCAA tournament this weekend, even though it is one of the top 12 seeds in the 64-team field.
The Hokies (14-7) and Virginia (9-5-5) both reaped at-large bids Monday.
Tech will be in a four-team regional at Dayton. Tech will face Ohio Valley Conference champ Murray State (11-8-2) in the first round Friday, with A-10 champ Dayton (16-0-5) meeting Marquette (15-5-2). The winners will meet in a second-round game at Dayton on Sunday.

The early-round sites were chosen to create the fewest number of plane flights, according to the NCAA. Among the top 16 seeds in the field, only Tech, Florida and Central Florida won’t be hosting this weekend.
Tech is the No. 3 seed in its 16-team bracket, which also includes No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Portland and No. 4 Penn State. Only the top four teams in each bracket were seeded. This is just the third NCAA bid for Tech, and the first time Tech has been seeded.
UVa was sent to a four-team regional at Penn State. The Cavaliers will face St. John’s (13-6-1) in the first round Friday, with the Big Ten champ Nittany Lions (12-5-2) facing Colgate (11-6-3).
This will be the first NCAA appearance for both Murray State and St. John’s.

Eight ACC teams made the field.

The winners will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday for a berth in the Sweet 16.
Virginia Wesleyan also got an at-large bid to the 63-team tournament; the Marlins will be in a four-team regional at Johns Hopkins.

Hidden Valley girls bounced in soccer

RADFORD -- Broad Run ended Hidden Valley's hopes of a state title Sunday, beating the Titans 3-0 in the Group AA girls' soccer final at Radford University.

Timesland teams are now 0-4 in state finals today, with only Blacksburg boys' soccer left to play.

No Timesland school has won a state team title at the Jubilee this year, including Saturday's state team finals in tennis. Three Timesland doubles pairs won state tennis titles Saturday.

The Spartans become the first team in Group AA Girls Soccer history to win back-to-back state titles. It was also the third state title in school history for Broad Run, which is also a new Group AA Girls Soccer standard.

Erin Brady (14th minute), Whitney Church (39th minute) and Valerie Powell (49th minute) each found the back of the net for Broad Run, while Kelly Evans provided the game’s only assist on Brady’s eventual difference maker.

Broad Run finished with an 8-1 advantage in shots and finished with a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

Miller’s 78th minute tally gives George Mason back-to-back Group A girls soccer title

RADFORD – Violet Miller’s goal with 2:25 left in regulation gave George Mason a 3-2 victory over Radford and its second straight and fourth overall Group A Girls Soccer Championship from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium on the campus of Radford University.

The Mustangs trailed 2-1 going into halftime, but Kim Kenny netted the equalizer in the 52nd minute after knocking in a cross from Miller inside the left post.

George Mason, who controlled much of the play in the second half, continued to put pressure on the Radford defense and it finally paid off. After a foul 25 yards left of the goal, Mayssa Chehata’s service found Millers foot just inside the box and she ripped it inside the left post for her second goal of the game.

Radford had a golden opportunity to tie off the restart, but Mary Wiley’s cross from the right went by three Bobcat players and was eventually cleared away.

The Mustangs outshot the Bobcats, 13-6, including 8-2 in the decisive second half. Britt Smith made seven saves for Radford. Caitlin Sickler stopped one shot for George Mason.

Radford boys lose in Group A soccer final

RADFORD -- Junior forward Nick Smirniotopolous' goal early supplied the game's only score as George Mason edged Radford 1-0 in the VHSL Group A boys soccer championship game Sunday afternoon at Radford University's Cupp Stadium.

The loss ended the Bobcats' dream of becoming the first team to win a third consecutive Group title. Radford, which averaged nearly five goals a game in its first 21 games, managed only four shots on goal.

It was the fourth state title for the Mustangs (20-2).

Tech loses in soccer

Virginia Tech fell to Wake Forest 2-0 in the NCAA men's soccer semifinals Friday night in Cary, N.C.
The Hokies, in the College Cup for the first time, allowed two second-half goals to Marcus Tracy.

NCAA soccer: Virginia Tech 0, Wake Forest 0, Half

An entertaining first half here at SAS Soccer Park ends with Virginia Tech tied with Wake Forest 0-0.

Each team had chances. The Hokies had the best one early in the half, as Patrick Nyarko took a long pass from the midfield and got between Wake goaltender Brian Edwards and the the net. Nyarko stumbled, however, and by the time he got his balance, the Wake keeper had gotten back in front of the net. Nyarko sent a pass to Robert Edmans on the left side and Edmans blasted it over with his left foot over the crossbar.

Edmans picked up a yellow card in the 34th minute, so he'll need to be careful in the second half. He, Nyarko and Ben Nason share the team lead in goals with seven apiece.

Excellent crowd on hand. Appears to be more Wake Forest fans than Tech -- which is to be expected since we're in Cary, North Carolina.

The winner of this national semifinal will face the winner of Ohio State-UMass on Sunday.
