Hokies fall to VCU

The Hokies committed 24 turnovers and too often got beaten on the boards in a 72-58 loss to VCU in Richmond.

Utahya Drye had 14 points and five turnovers. Allyssa Fenyn had 13 points and four turnovers. Point guard Nikki Davis had six turnovers for Tech.

Center Stephanie Solomon had 11 points and 10 rebounds as five Rams scored in double figures.

Hokies, Cavs in women's soccer Sweet 16

In the NCAA women's soccer tournament Sunday, the third-seeded Hokies won at Dayton 3-1, while UVa won at fourth-seeded Penn State 6-2.

Next up is the Sweet 16. Tech will visit second-seeded Portland (20-1) at 10 p.m. Friday Eastern time.

UVa will visit top-seeded UCLA (19-2-1) at the same time.

The winners will square off the following weeekend at the highest remaining seed for a berth in the final four.

Hokies cruise in opener

Five Hokies scored in double figures as Virginia Tech opened its women's basketball season with a 77-55 win over Longwood.

Utahya Drye and Alyssa Fenyn each scored 15 points. Shanel Harrison had 13, Nikki Davis 11 and Abby Redick 10.

Ryan gets 700th win

The Cavaliers opened their season with a 73-68 win over UMBC on the road, giving hall of fame coach Debbie Ryan her 700th win.

Ryan, 700-298, is the 12th women's basketball coach to reach 700 wins.

For shame, Nike and Tech

“Prepare for Combat” the sign screamed on a board behind the podium as Nike and Virginia Tech unveiled the Hokies’ new “Pro Combat” uniforms Monday in Blacksburg. Shame on Nike and shame on Virginia Tech and nine other college football teams who will be wearing the new uniforms this season before Nike outfits all of its clients with the same uniforms in 2010. Football is often compared to war, but it’s not. No one presumably will die Saturday when the Hokies play at Maryland. With our country involved in two wars and some former members of Tech’s Corps of Cadets not returning home, it is particularly distressing that Tech would wear these uniforms. — Buddy Wright

NCAA women's soccer pairings: VT, UVa, W&L

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Virginia Tech won’t get to play at home in the NCAA tournament this weekend, even though it is one of the top 12 seeds in the 64-team field.
The Hokies (14-7) and Virginia (9-5-5) both reaped at-large bids Monday.
Tech will be in a four-team regional at Dayton. Tech will face Ohio Valley Conference champ Murray State (11-8-2) in the first round Friday, with A-10 champ Dayton (16-0-5) meeting Marquette (15-5-2). The winners will meet in a second-round game at Dayton on Sunday.

The early-round sites were chosen to create the fewest number of plane flights, according to the NCAA. Among the top 16 seeds in the field, only Tech, Florida and Central Florida won’t be hosting this weekend.
Tech is the No. 3 seed in its 16-team bracket, which also includes No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Portland and No. 4 Penn State. Only the top four teams in each bracket were seeded. This is just the third NCAA bid for Tech, and the first time Tech has been seeded.
UVa was sent to a four-team regional at Penn State. The Cavaliers will face St. John’s (13-6-1) in the first round Friday, with the Big Ten champ Nittany Lions (12-5-2) facing Colgate (11-6-3).
This will be the first NCAA appearance for both Murray State and St. John’s.

Eight ACC teams made the field.
W&L women's soccer home for NCAAs
The NCAA announced Monday that Washington and Lee will host first- and second-round games this weekend in the Division III tournament.
The Generals (16-1-3), who earned an automatic NCAA bid by winning the ODAC tournament last weekend, will host USA South champ Christopher Newport (12-7-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Lynchburg (14-3-3), which reaped an at-large bid, will face Landmark Conference champ Catholic (17-2-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at W&L.
The winners will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday for a berth in the Sweet 16.
Virginia Wesleyan also got an at-large bid to the 63-team tournament; the Marlins will be in a four-team regional at Johns Hopkins.
