How to make AYP in Roanoke
For Sunday we are working on an editorial about Virginia Department of Education's adequate yearly progress report for schools. As expected, schools did about the same as last year, and the year before and the year before that. One thing can turn that around: community involvement.

I woke up this morning to find this concise, but powerful statement.
The editorial board gets it.
Parents and community members should be empowered to participate in the educational lives of their children.
Stephen Stanley, one of my priests at Christ Episcopal Church Roanoke, has been deeply involved in the efforts to improve our failing schools, particularly Highland Park. Stephen sees it as a moral responsibility and, apparently, the Roanoke Times Editorial Board does too.
Our children need to be exposed to teachers, community members, etc., from beyond their own insulated neighborhoods.
There isn't an RCPS North or RCPS South, but one system and all our children should benefit from the selfless efforts of community members and parents working on behalf of our children.
