A new fire station for Melrose

Roanoke plans soon to start building a new station. Residents should see better service.

Within a few months, Roanoke's second modern fire station will come online and a third will be under construction. The last of the new stations has an added bonus for the city's Northwest residents: a police substation.

Conduct codes don't trump free speech

Roanoke and Radford city councils should end a prohibition on talking about closed-door sessions.

It's a good idea for city councils to have codes of conduct that clearly explain to elected members what behavior is acceptable and what is not.

But sometimes it is items in the codes that are unacceptable.

Christiansburg needs buses

Regional planners want citizen input on transit.

For years, Christiansburg residents could only gaze jealously at Blacksburg's transit system. Sure, one bus route came into Christiansburg and hit a few central stops, but it was never good enough for regular commuting.

As the cost of gas rose, that jealousy slid into deadly sin. The price at the pump might have moderated a bit lately, but we suspect there are still a good many people in Christiansburg who envy Blacksburg's buses.

  1. This editorial about the idea of busses in Christiansburg brings up an idea I had, which was to combine the BT, the Radford University transit system, Community Transit, Pulaski Area Transit, and a couple more smaller agencies into one regional transit authority. If the New River Valley is an emerging metropolitan area, lets move forward and link up all our communities under one New River Valley Transit Authority, instead of this multitude of agencies with no cross-cooperation. As a transit driver for Radford University, one of my biggest questions I get from my patrons is "when are we going to be able to take a bus to the mall". Unfortunately, you can't get there from here, at least on a bus. Also, foreign exchange students can't believe the lack of public transportation we have here. If we can come up with some sort of continuous bus service in the NRV, we can reduce the number of cars on the road, especially on VA-114 and US-11. This would be a great time for our area leaders to really show the rest of the state, and possibly the nation, that we can have a model public transportation system that works.
