Downtown Blacksburg's businesses should recycle more

We're working on an editorial for Wednesday about recycling in downtown Blacksburg. The town council next week will decide whether to continue developing a plan for mandatory commercial recycling. Every business would pay a fee, and garbage collection would be charged by weight, encouraging greater recycling.

Some of the details still need to be worked out, but the basic idea is sound, especially given the amount of glass generated by the town's bars. The council should move forward.

Read the actual recommendations on commercial recycling at Sustainable Blacksburg's site.

  1. I was actually very suprised to see that they didn't already have a recycling program in place. Given the large volume of bottled beverages consumed downtown, not to mention all of the other paper, plastic, and metal waste likely generated, I really would have figured this was being done. It's about time that a system be put in place for the downtown merchants and other commercial users...I would have to guess that they generate more recyclable waste than the citizenry does on a daily basis.
