Lessons learned from Katrina and the Midwest
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Monday briefed Roanoke City Council on plans to reinforce the two levees that it recently built along River's Edge as part of the Roanoke River flood reduction plan.
The levees, or training walls (named as such because they are supposed to train the water from spilling the banks) may be susceptible to the type erosion that caused similar walls to fail during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and more recently during the Midwest floodings. These particular walls were designed pre-Katrina.
The Corps wisely is revisiting projects that it has underway. Here's a link to view the most recent presentation. You can also view from there an earlier presentation that demonstrates scenarios of flooding during varying sets of circumstances.
