Transportation museum challenge comes at a tough time

NS Chairman Wick Moorman's surprising offer Tuesday to contribute $1 million for capital and operations expenses at the Virginia Museum of Transportation was generous, but also a big challenge. The museum will get the money if it raises $2 million, half from local governments and half from the private sector. In an editorial Friday, we'll write that with municipalities facing state funding cuts -- even, most likely, to education -- they will need to look hard at their resources and put this request in line with other priorities.

  1. Ugh... It is sad in this Recession that the things some people hold dear sit on the edge of the abyss of closing for good :/ I do hope they go on, they have been a good museum for Roanoke

  2. This potentially distinguished museum has suffered long enough at the hands of inept leadership. This $3 million challenge is worth the effort to recruit a capable professional to take charge and steer the institution creatively and aggressively into the long-term future. The Mariners' Museum in Newport News is now headed successfully by the former president of William & Mary College, a skilled leader with a global perspective, who had no prior background in maritime activities nor the museum field. The Transportation Museum is pathetically local.
