Subtracting, rather than adding, in Virginia's schools
Like their counterparts around the state, school boards in Southwestern Virginia are preparing for staff reductions that might be made necessary by deep cuts in state funding. Friday, we'll write that boards are wise to take a realistic look at the possible impact. Virginians, however, should not mistake financial necessity for prudent spending. Deep cuts are almost certain to hurt the quality of public education.
