Discuss Friday's commentary and letters

Limbaugh knows not of which he speaks

Robert E. Dixon
Dixon is retired and lives in Bedford.

Rush Limbaugh's latest gaffe about the current state of the economy is over the top. Here is a man with absolutely no credentials in anything. He is not an economist, CEO or a scientist. He did go part way through the first semester of junior college before dropping out. And like Al Bundy, he played high school football. This does not stop him from making pronouncements on weighty matters. Instead of looking at all sides of an issue, he draws a conclusion and then finds an "expert" who agrees with him to prove his point.

Obama promotes a culture of death

John Stec
Stec, of Covington, is an engineer.

Many dirty deeds are not done in public, so with little fanfare or protest, President Obama quietly vetoed the so-called Mexico City policy. Under this policy, groups promoting or performing abortions overseas would be denied government money. As of Jan. 23, one day after the annual Right to Life March in Washington, D.C., our tax dollars now pay for international abortions, courtesy of Obama.

  1. Not that I agree with Rush...I don't listen to him any more. But, what exactly are Mr. Dixon's credentials? He went out of the way to connect Rush with Al Bundy(?).

I am so tired of all of the cheap shots from BOTH SIDES. This is getting rediculous!! WAKE UP!!!

  2. Why is everyone talking about a journalist? Aren't there people in Washington worthy of mention? What is with this sudden infatuation with Limbaugh? Is he paying the media to get his ratings up?

    Typical...
[Insert name here] promotes a culture of death

  3. RE: Obama promotes culture of death

LOL. Ok, this actually had me laughing.

"The odd thing about Obama? He is a black (actually only half-black) president with a vendetta against black babies."

    "his anti-baby stance"

"Condoms are a death sentence on many more black Africans."

hehe...I just can't help but giggle, John's quotes say enough...I need not explain.

  4. Limbaugh knows not of which he speaks
    Robert E. Dixon
    Amen 4!!
Mr. Dixon is so correct, articulate, right on and factual, I am proud he is in Bedford!

That so many people still not only listen to Limbaugh's bombastic, sarcastic, insulting political diatribes, but will parrot it back, speaks volumes about how this country became the discordant and divisive nation we can be. The misinformation people will accept if it fits their world view or ideology is frightening. The right wing zealots love to talk about the fervor, vitriol, delusion and ignorance on the Left without ever seeing the log in their own eye.

Right on and Thanks to You, Mr. Dixon.

  5. Bedford always was a pretty cool place. (Cause it's my hometown!)

  6. The Great Rush may have many failings. Like Bill Gates, however, an "education" in one of this countries liberal institutions of higher learning has proven to not be a real problem. His critics usually find him objectionable because he has a very good command of the facts and history of the issues and those critics usually are unable to deal with his superior communication skills, wit and, dare I say, his exceptional personal charm (as is particularily expressed by his female following). When he speaks on these matters, he speaks from the point of view of a great American and an Entripeneaur who has experienced success far beyond the level of the rest of us mear mortals and certainly probably beyond the level of Dixon. BTW, I think his role is to offer a counter balance to the likes of essentially all media personalities. So when you look into the faces of all your little children and grand children ask yourself one question. Would you like them to grow up to be like Rush? Or would you rather they turn out like Snoop Dog, Mike Vick or maybe Sean Penn. Gee! It just hit me. None of them have an education either.

  7. So, Sandi, are you saying that the left is prim and proper while the right is zealots who promotes delusion and ignorance. I believe there is PLENTY of that to go around.

After reading a lot of what's been said on these topics the last week or so, I'm about sick of everyone who is pointing fingers and spouting nothing but insults. What good does any of it do? Please tell me!! I'd like to know how it is you expect the other side to even consider your arguement when all you people do is say these nasty things.

For all of you who supported Obama for his "hope and change:" Why don't you start practicing that? Change here in America starts in individual hearts and minds. When you continue to verbally (or is it type-ally?) beat down other people, it shows your hypocracy.

For all of you on the right: What good does it do to just repeat the same things you hear on the radio? I do lean right on most issues, but I have stopped listening to talk radio...because they aren't trying to come together and reach a compromise, either. They are just as divisive as the left leaning editorials and Congresspeople who continue business as usual.

I'm tired of all this fighting and "we're completely right and you are completely wrong" mentality. Let's come together and figure out how to fix this mess we are ALL in.

BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE

  8. Al #6: Brilliant defense of the (to many) indefensible! His obscene wealth and cult like following would have you and others here and all over the country up in arms and ready to fight if his was a Liberal Voice and we all know it. The danger would be imminent! That he is your champion is obvious, that he is a role model is beyond frightening. Your choice of what our children should grow up to be is as telling as are his. I would like my children to be like Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Madame Curie, Van Gogh, Mozart, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr. (I can go on) but if the choice was literally between Snoop Dog and Rush Limbaugh then Snoop it is. Now both our colors are flying!

  9. Al...

Can I choose "None of the above"?

    Comment by Will — January 30, 2009 @ 12:34 pm

  10. Excellent Post Danny! Good advice and true to the core. Please do not think my responses mean that I do not know the Left is just as guilty, just as vitriolic and sometimes, just as wrong. I do hold up the mirror and look in it too, I just cannot seem to let the slams roll off. I am a Liberal and not ashamed of it; but I hate it when someone starts a supposed dialog with a snarky slam and then we are expected to reply civilly and intelligently to the insulter. I guess I am just not "the bigger person". I am sorry for that!

Perhaps that is why the moderates may save us all. If you know the insults are aimed at others, it gives you more room to think, rationalize and decide (hopefully better) solutions. Thanks for the reminder again. Repeat as often as needed and maybe we will get it, we do have that in common - hard heads!

  12. Will, Your will is your own. Should one dig deep into the recesses of some posters mind you may see some "fun polking" going on. You know, just to smoke out the feelings of some of the hard core liberals who profess to be fair and open minded. No hard core liberal is fair OR open minded, BTW. Honestly, and with no ill toward you, I don't think I ever knew a hard core liberal that actually had a mind. Yep, hard core is what calls wealth "obscene"...of course those roughly 10% of obscene people are paying the tab for the 50% that are standing around with their hands out. What would this country do without such obscenity in this land of opportunity. Funny, isn't it! Guess I better go load up on ammo for my M-16 and M-60 now. Rumor has it that EL RUSHBO is going to conduct a drill for all us militant types someplace over in Craig county and I damm well want to be ready when the call goes out. Any body have a 50 cal for sale?

  13. Al...

I'll confess...I can be as pig headed and stubborn as the day is long, but I have learned after all these years (ughhh, am I feeling old) that there is generally more than one side to an issue. If you get all the blustering and blowing out of the way though, there's usually room for concensus and compromise.

Obscenely wealthy....hummm...I don't know, but perhaps the likes of Jack Welch, Bill Gates, Ophra Winfrey, Mitt Romney, Rush Limbaugh. Although I thought it was pretty refreshing to hear that Michael Bloomberg has the honor of having donated the most money to charity during 2008 - $235 Million I believe.

I like his quote to the effect that the best measure of a true philanthropist is that the check to the undertaker bounces. My kind of man there.

    Cheers!

  14. Being an admitted Liberal who not only rejects that I am one iota less open-minded or fair than Conservatives, I still do not have the unmitigated arrogance, gall or sense of humor to actually say that no hard core Conservative is fair OR open minded or that I don't think I ever knew a hard core Conservative that actually had a mind. (I sure know some however) Nor do I believe that in a world full of dying, starving babies, homeless people, people without health care, mentally ill people without proper care, teachers, doctors, policeman, and soldiers who are woefully underpaid and undervalued, that you must be hard core to think there is such a thing as obscene wealth that is out of all proportion. Keith Olbermann (as much as I love him) is no where near worth 7.5 million and Rush is no where near worth 33 million in salary (forget the extras that make that number even more obscene). They are hardly the only examples, just who we happened to mention in this thread. This Liberal knows obscenity when she sees it and it does not have to involve nudity or sex acts.

  15. Truly, at first I thought Mr. Stec was deranged and then I thought he was an Engineer who could really make things up out of whole cloth. but now I see he has just joined a very ugly movement that is more than willing to use lies and half-truths to serve the message. President Obama is a Christian who is pragmatic enough to know that abortion has to remain AN answer, not THE answer, not the best answer for all, not even an answer we like, but an answer to a serious and growing problem that must remain available. Until those who oppose abortion spend as much time, effort, energy, and investment on the children already here, I will not allow the feigned outrage over abortion to go unchallenged.

As for the obnoxious insertion about the stem cell research, that is simply a lie. NO ONE supports pregnancies to achieve embryonic stem cells. The fact is there are embryonic stem cells being thrown into the incinerators of a medical facility near you, so putting them to some use for the greater good is infinitely preferable to rational people.
