  1. Oh Boy...this might draw ire and fire...

Can we say it is MOST important for government programs to be strong, that the economy must be VITAL and GROWING first as a priority? I mean working Americans and successful businesses are the GEESE LAYING THE GOLDEN EGGS!! So why do our governments adopt policies (in some cases) and allow behavior detrimental to economic growth?

  2. Did I miss something, Bud? To what are you referring?

Unfortunately I have laid no golden eggs today. No matter how hard my boss whips me...

  3. Good question. Simple answer. I had a lengthy one but decided to shorten it. The answer is RE-ELECTION. Combined with a class of politicians who feel it is their task to save people from themselves who and that the public is too stupid.

  5. Herb, it rings alright, but what it rings 'of' is not truth. It is sad that inclusion and respect is so villified. Did Jesus speak English?

  6. Herb Krebs,

God no, it doesn't. This is one of the silliest non-issues the right wing has ever invented.

The one thing in that video to commend it, is it's honest portrayal of the millions of immigrants who are struggling to learn English. Most English-only propagandists pretend that people have to be "forced" into it somehow.

Yes, it's nice to have a universal language so everybody can communicate with each other, but it's still a fact of life that many people in the US can't speak English for one reason or another, and they need to have access to public information in forms they can understand.

Objecting to a mere reminder that other languages exist, like "Press one for English", is nothing but selfish.

  7. well Herb,
Is that girl singing..English is the "langueeeeege" of these United States? While i can identify with the message, one could have a better messenger than this lady with the silicone speakers!
No Sandi..Jesus did not speak English- he spent little time in London or DC.

Ed H---I thought it telling in the video of the "classes" being taught for immigrants to learn English, the photos looked to be 20 -60 years old. Meaning now it's accepted that an immigrant can come here without learning the English langueeeeege( I'm gonna hear that all day long) and we'll bend over backward at taxpayer/business expense to accomodate their lack of initiative.

  8. First time I ever heard that, BUD. Makes no sense. Sure it's not an urban legend?

  9. Ed and Sandi,
This country was founded on English.
Why is it so hard to demand that a person speak our language.
Are you telling me that I should have to learn thiers to sell
them goods and services and they dont have to learn mine.
    What a crock.
Why do you think we are in the situation we are in today.
Crime, govt handouts because immigrants refuse to speak the countries
language. This is one area that I refuse to comprimise.
If you cant speak to me in my language, I dont want your business.
Sandi, as a christen I know Jesus speaks all languages now.
His words are for all mankind.
After alot of your posts, I find it hard for you even to quote him.

  10. Did the American Indians speak English?

    Comment by Blue John — March 2, 2009 @ 10:26 am

  11. Herb...

You're absolutely right. Many of the settlers of this country spoke the King's English.

My only question is when are the rest of us going to learn how to speak, spell and write correctly as an example to those who are newcomers?

Before we start imposing it on others, we need to be able to do it correctly ourselves.

  12. I am wif you Will.
    I am all dat..
But dont ax me any questions.
    Now what I mean homes.
    Blue,
As for your comment, I dont even know where to begin there.
I believe we screwed the american Indian and still doing it today.
So since the Anglo saxon took over this land I guess turn around is far play and let the Spanish speaking immigrant forcefully make me speak there language.
is that what your are getting at?

  13. 'Give us your tired and poor' should have included '...after you have learned the basic requirements to function in this country, such as how to drive, how to speak English, etc.'

Granted, that is pretty much impossible, but if we are going to blast the government for allowing so many people into the country that cannot function day-to-day with other Americans, then we must equally chide the government for not putting forth a mandatory program to get these people trained/educated/etc in order to have a good life here and if the people cannot adequately complete the program (which would be extensive) then they must go back.
