Discuss Traud's column on smoking
A smoking case of collusion
By Luanne Traud
When I smoked, my favorite warning label on the side of the pack said: "Smoking by pregnant women may result in fetal injury, premature birth and low birth." Since I wasn't pregnant, no health worry there. Right? Anyway "may" is different than "will."

I don't really get the theme or thesis of this column. It's sort of all over the place. Is the thesis "Tobacco companies are colluding to kill their customers"? If so, we need to add one more perpetrator to roster of evil greedy heartless conspirators who also extracts thousands of dollars before letting the people die; government. If local, state, and federal government were TRULY concerned with people instead of $, they would BAN TOBACCO. But they don't.

"I would imagine smokers would still rationalize away the danger even if packs were plastered with Mr. Yuk stickers and they were required during the purchase to view the skeletal-like remains of a person dying from lung cancer. So powerful is the addiction."
A co-worker visited some family in the Phillippines about a year ago. Though she doesn't smoke, she brought back a couple of packs because the packaging intrigued her. A picture of a grotesque throat tumor was on the front of one pack. I cannot remember the picture on the other, but it was equally graphic.

EdS..the surgeon general in the Phillippines must be a lot more demanding than ours here.
