Hoping both teams lose the world series. Can it be possible?
And I have a hunch this Market Building is going to be a complete disaster and black eye for the City and tourism. The article this morning gave me the impression that they are just trying to drive the vendors out and do away with them to bring new "shinier" vendors in. For the love of pete I hope they do this right.

#2: LOL!
It looks like the public health option is dead thanks to about a dozen rational Dems like Lieberman.

@#1 I could not agree more about the Market building. Based on how they have planned the construction sequencing and how much it impacts the current tenants...plus the duration, I don't see how any of the current tenants can survive unless they relocate permanently...and even then, I think they won't do well because the Market building offered something unique and special in the area that was a solid draw for downtown workers, residents, and out-of-towners. It's sad to see that DRI and the folks involved in the project are apparently either so inept as to think their plan will result in an improvement of the center, or so cowardly so as to force out the vendors with an entirely unworkable plan to make them leave, rather than just tell them to hit the streets to their face. Either way, it's already been a disaster and the circus continues. I feel bad for the shop/eatery owners, they're getting hosed.

@5. I'm going to try and stay optimistic (this mornings article didn't help), but it looks like they are trying to keep as much blood off their hands as possible. This is turning into a "pass the popcorn" issue. Are the inmates running the asylum or is the asylum not being run?

I see another political cartoon dogging McDonnell. With all of Prez Obama's triumphs, you'd think we could get a little variety?
Comment by BUD — October 28, 2009 @ 12:34 pm
#7 - Won't happen BUD. The RT must do everything it can to defeat McDonnell if it's to stand a chance of receiving gov't money when the newspaper bailouts start.
Comment by Patrick — October 28, 2009 @ 1:05 pm
I thought the political cartoon was dogging Deeds, not McDonnell. As in every campaign, Deeds had the opportunity to try to define McDonnell ("carving the pumpkin") but instead stuck to the thesis and that's it. It's an indictment of Deeds' campaign, not McDonnell.
Comment by skeeter — October 28, 2009 @ 1:57 pm
Heck, Deeds didn't make that much of the thesis either. That was mostly the press who hoped it would be another macaca. He tried to get a little traction out of it but abandoned that when he saw it was accomplishing nothing. I don't recall even seeing an attack ad on it.
Given the predispositon of the RT and the RTEB, you have about a 90+% chance it was intended to be anti-McDonnell.

The timing of this "renovation" is certainly suspect. Perhaps the old market isn't proper decorum for the "new" neighborhood. (Cough..museum..cough..cough.)
Comment by Art Hill — October 28, 2009 @ 3:08 pm
@11 ~ well you would think they (DRI, City Council, not sure the correct organization of ownership)would fix up the market area first and turn it into a pedestrian street. Seems less expensive with the most visual impact for residents and tourists. Restaurants and shops are more open and friendly, street vendors/performers, more room to walk around, yada, yada, etc.
What do I know though.
Comment by Uptheriver — October 28, 2009 @ 3:20 pm
What exactly is "suspect" about the timing, Art? Both the Market Building and the Center in the Square renovations have been in the works for a few years.
The Market building is in need of renovations to replace antiquated systems and to up date it for better usage. Perhaps the project will allow, at last, for rental income to offset operational costs. The project had to work its way up the list of capital improvement projects.
Center also has been raising money for some time, and there were plans all along that once the art museum moved out it would make improvements to expand other offerings into that space.

yeh another big success

There was absolutely no interest in this building until they plunked a 66 million dollar museum in the backyard. I'd say that's suspect, yes, and so do a whole lot of other people.
