Keep the Roanoke city manager search open

In an editorial for later in the week, we'll be reiterating our call to Roanoke City Council to make its search process for a new city manager as open as possible.

Unfortunately, Councilmember Rupert Cutler had this to say at Monday's meeting: "On the matter of confidentiality, I'd like to explain that we will not be able to make the names of the candidates public for the obvious reason that all but one of the top candidates are currently employed asĀ  city managers in other cities and they do not want their interest in changing jobs known to their current employers."

We understand why some candidates would not want to let their current employers know they're on the lookout. But that personal interest is outweighed by the public interest in finding the best candidate possible - and vetting the finalists as completely as possible.

  1. There is always, always a reason from city council to issues quite, behind closed doors. Where is the open gov't we were promised by this council? Where is the communication with the citizenry that was promised? In the closet perhaps?
