Neo-Nazi must now lie in bed he made
Imagine you're a self-proclaimed, Neo-Nazi leader who routinely spews hatred and disdain against blacks, Jews and others.
You get arrested on a charge of encouraging violence against a juror and end up in federal court in Chicago.
You're sitting before U.S. District Court Judge William Hibbler, who belongs to a group of people you have derided as "half-ape" and "n-----s."
In other words, he's black.
Maybe if you're William A. White, you look up at the man sitting in judgment of you, and the vile words you have written and the hatred you have incited flash before your eyes:
- "It's nice to occasionally hide in the memories of a time when civil liberty and human freedom still meant keeping a n----- out of your store and a President could launch a social program called "Operation Wetback." -- February 2008
- "For too long these half-ape animals have been able to intimidate white humanity with these threats of violence," White said, "We are letting the n-----s know we are no longer intimidated." -- February 2008
- "King was just another ignorant, loud-mouthed, lying, cheating, stealing, pimping and abusing ghetto n----- that the Jew media puffed up beyond all reasonable bounds." -- March 2008
- "I am also glad that I am so feared by Roanoke's Negroes, whom I have repeatedly beaten in the streets and in the courts, that they hold me responsible for all their troubles in this City. I hope their troubles mount until they all become so miserable that they pack up their bags and leave." -- September 2007
- "It is also a shame to hear that so many of the Jewish vermin live in proximity to a rural community like Urbana-Champaign. One can only pray that the near future brings the extermination of this pest."-- May 2008
Such ugly words have an audience among the like-minded fringe who reside on the dark underbelly of the Internet.
But when White's words caused him to be thrust into the harsh glare of the judicial spotlight in a Chicago courtroom Friday afternoon, he stood alone.
White is the self-appointed commander of a white supremacy group. Where were his followers when he needed them? Not in the courtroom Friday, if they exist at all.
Except for immediate family, White was alone at a bail hearing in a city where, only months before, he had organized a banquet in honor of Adolf Hitler's birthday.

For years, White's bizarre online postings have provoked, incited, bullied and threatened.
Before federal investigators shut down White's Web site in October, his postings included a call to lynch the Jena Six, a group of Louisiana teens charged with assault in a case that prompted a civil rights rally last year.
More recently, the site carried an image of Barack Obama, his head in rifle cross hairs, along with the headline "Kill This N-----?"
No matter how offensive his words, White had been adept at staying on the right side of the free speech line.
Until now.
His antics are no longer merely just the rants of a young provocateur.
He's now in his 30s, a husband and father, and his actions have snatched him away from his family and his responsibilities.
As we mature, our decisions and actions come with a reckoning that extends beyond ourselves, to our immediate family, to our to extended family, to our friends and to society.
For White, one of those reckonings came Friday, when the judge decided to hold him without bail until his trial. Hibbler based his concern not so much White's potential actions if he were released, but what others might do at his suggestion.
As for Bill White, he's been making this bed for years. Now, he's finally lying in it.

Recently I came across the rantings of a child of a Corrections Officer on a News Paper Blog. He would go in great detail how his father would beat Black inmates when others wasn't looking or ignored his beatings of Black Prisoners and at the end of the day he would come home and brag to his family of his feats of heroism.
On reflection of the tales one would wonder is there truth to his rants, and the attacks ex-cons of local police officers is directed toward ignorant people of the aforementioned and those that act cowardly behind the badge.
Having great respect for our local police officers it's just sometimes you wonder.

Country Boy: Your spelling and grammar totally destroy the credibility of whatever you were trying to say. Just exactly WHAT are you trying to say? I've seen people that just swam across the Rio Grande that had far better grammatical, spelling, and compositional skills than you have demonstrated here. The person you've hurt the most is YOURSELF! You've let everyone who reads this column know now, beyond a doubt, you're semi-illiterate, somebody told you the 3rd grade was your senior year and you believed it.
Now on the other hand, I do have a problem with the prosecution of Bill White. IF he had done one single thing to carry out his thinly veiled threats and implied courses of action, then surely he would have been locked up just as he is now. But to lock him up just for running his mouth, no matter what he said, is wrong in my opinion. If the powers that be can lock HIM up for saying what he thinks, they can do the same to me, Shanna, or anyone else. I'd rather have people like him running their mouth a mile a minute so the rest of us know EXACTLY what they're thinking instead of dealing with a "quiet type" that you don't even know exist until they go on a mass killing spree or blow up some building.

There will always be hatred and for that to exist there will always be those who hate and those who are hated. Pretending it doesn't happen by not talking about it does not make it go away. Accusing the writer of "NATURAL TENDANCIES to be a NEGRO SUPPORTER" is unfair. Just as unfair as accusing 'country boy' of having natural tendencies toward being a red neck, right-wing, KKK supporter.
I think 'country boy' missed the point of the article. Yes, White's wife and children are now without their husband and father. If White had cared one iota about that, he would have stopped his public hate-mongering, and threats. He knew he was one step away from losing his freedom... and leaving his wife and family. Yet, spreading his messages of hatred was more important to him than anything else. Hence... he made his bed.

I think William White would say that his actions were clear and that he is doing what is right for his cause. Although I do not personally agree with White, I think that we need more people like him. Not in the way that you may be thinking. He was an advocate, and an active one based on your article. If more folks would utilize their energy toward a goal, whether that is a business, paying their bills, getting an education, people would be better off tomorrow than they are today. Countryboy raises a point, do we need another mother without a husband to raise a child. What did he really do? Nothing that I have seen or read. Just because you advocate a point of view, that does not mean that you should be imprisoned for it.
You certainly advocate a point of view, however, we or I do not wish you imprisoned for it.
Isn't it odd that he was picked up before the election? I guess someone was trying to make a name for themselves for the president elect!

Your first paragraph had me chuckling. Your second paragraph is pretty much on target from a freedom of speech standpoint, with one exception ... I perceived his last "rant" as a threat against the president-elect, as did prosecutors, unless I am mistaken. After the shootings of presidents Kennedy and Regan, and two attempts on President Ford, ANY threat against a public official has to be taken seriously. While Mr. "White" may have thought he was being cute by straddling the fine line between "speech" and "crime", it has long been an axiom of the law that 'ignorance of the law is no excuse' and that seems to have been the case here. I expect he will have a couple of years in a nice Club Fed for this one, and he'll check with his lawyers before he opens his mouth again. There's an old saying that applies both to Mr. White and to O.J. Simpson, whose words on that tape provided the only real evidence against him ... it's sometimes better to remain quiet and appear foolish than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

While the fact that Mr. White is appearing before a black federal judge may make the defendant squirm a little, I doubt that the judge will even consider anything other than the issue before him, i.e., whether a juror or the president-elect was threatened by that message, or whether it encouraged others to do so. Likewise, I believed the female white judge who sent O.J. to his just rewards, when she emphatically stated that she wasn't meting out justice for another case.
I agree, and the column as you suggest merely reflects the irony of White standing before a black judge. I was not explicit in my complete understanding that judges are ethically and legally bound to check personal opinions and biases at the door when hearing a case. That was the intended implication when I stated Hibbler's reason for holding White, which had nothing to do with how he personally felt about the defendant. Additionally, as reporter Laurence Hammack wrote in his news story, Hibbler didn't even comment as to White's "racist views."--s

The best way to talk about race relations is to talk about it. Mostly those that don't usually have some negative feelings about some racial issues and through a rational dialog this subject will improve.
By you using all "CAPS" you were trying to get a point across, from what one would gather is you have a problem with minorities as well.

From her post I gather the best way to fix race relations is just ignore it and the problem will go away. By bring those fears out through discussion is the only way to fix this problem.
The Emancipation of slaves was signed nearly a 150 yrs ago and most Americans are still afraid to have discussions of race rationally.

It seems that country boy uses the same tactic and logic that many "right wing" thinkers / proponents (i.e. Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, etc) use: 1. Accuse people of something, call it wrong yet do the same thing.
2. Not acknowledging that there could be a problem with their particular ideology or methodology.
Now it is indeed a shame that Mr. White's family won't have daddy home right now. But he did it. How many poor families that are on public assistance can't get married because if they do then mom & the kids lose their home. The answer is not simply "get a job you bum." Try working for $6/hr and take care of yourself and your family without any help. Good luck!
The problem is much deeper than who called who what. We have a crisis in Roanoke. Race relations are not good here, we are still one of the most segregated cities in the entire country (geographically). Education is in shambles and we waste our time following backwards thinking & antiquated social standards just to preserve our "small town feel." Seriously, as a preacher in one of the 500 or so churches this little city has you would think that we would have progressed in our race relations and human relations on a whole. Roanoke is know all over this half of the country for a few reasons: 1. A place that you can get on public assistance easily. 2.High STD rates 3. High gay population. 4. Segregation.
Be proud. We are wasting our time again talking about the problem but not WORKING towards solutions.

Ms. Flowers enjoyed your article. In today’s Southern Son's of Liberty on-line bulletin, a neo-Nazi bulletin, they have given out Bill White’s mailing address, I’m sure some twit will be writing him to give this cretin support. As a long time researcher of the white supremacy movement, I have not found this Bill White to be either creditable or very intelligent, there is some evidence that he is of Jewish blood and is one of those few poor self-hating Jews who are mentally ill, as are any other people are, who embrace the idea of supremacy of one over another.
That being said, it should be apparent to any intelligent person that in these hard economic times, there will be those who seek to place the blame for their misfortune upon others. This will serve as a recruiting tool for white supremacy groups. We as Americans, Black, White, Hispanic and Asian, must do whatever is necessary to destroy these groups (888 at last count in the U.S. alone) by bring to bear pressure to Congress and the Senate to pass federal laws to outlaw these groups and their followers. We have a great opportunity to bring this about and close down any and all supremacy groups of whatever race. We should have no race in America except the American Race that encompasses all American Citizens. Keep cultural backgrounds for sure, but we must be American’s First and Foremost without regard to shin color, religion, creed or other nonsense that is immaterial to a person’s character and self-responsibility.
Let this generation be the generation that makes the phase “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America……” come true at last for all peoples of our country and that “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…” become the standard for all Americans to live by, it means little what color your skin is to those who have served their country as it is clear that the only color that truly matters is the color of blood, sacrificed by every colonist and later to all American military personal who took up arms in defense of an ideal that is America.

I think there should be open discussion about race. However, there are always tactfull ways of discussing anything. I think what Marie was trying to say is, things can be discussed-but to discuss them doesn't mean you have to insult or spout hatred toward one race or the other. I am sure there are many racist groups on ALL sides of the race issue. I highly doubt that white people are the only racisit people in America. Having said that, I agree with the other post that there will always be somebody hating somebody else. That is just how it will always be. Black, white, brown, yellow, there will always be somebody hating somebody simply because of the color of their skin. I think everyone--no matter your color...needs to look at the heart of someone. I feel sorry for Mr White, he is missing out on many wonderful friendships-just because he judges people on their exterior appearances.

There had to be another, more important topic to comment on Shanna. I am not bashing you or the article, but by posting this about him you have done nothing but give him what he wants, attention. There are ignorant people the world over. In all walks of life, all races and nationalities, men or women. We cannot change the mindset of them all, so why let it bother us. The media is the major factor for the divide in this country. A major turning point with the media came from the Rodney King incident and the events that followed. Case in point the media fueled public outrage over the police handling of King who was fleeing from police at a high rate of speed while under the influence of narcotics. Where was the same outrage when rioters pulled an innocent truck driver from his vehicle and bludgeoned him with a brick? Wrong is wrong. Whether its white on black, black on white, white on white, or black on black. Political correctness has stifled any serious discussion on race issues or improvement. People on both sides fear that if they speak on the issue they will automatically be labeled as a racist. If you want to improve race relations, start with one's self. Educate yourself constantly and be as successful as you can be. If someone hates you because of your race or nationality they are only showing their ignorance.

I believe in peace in my life time and I do think it is coming, but a terrible price will be paid for it.
I ask this question, why can a black person call another black person, the
N word, but if a white person uses the N word in reference to a black person, he is a racist and should be punished?
As horrific as things seem to be here for blacks, who would want to have
lived in their homeland Africa?
I and a lot of my friends were shocked at the hatred, and ill will that came out because of Obama's bid for the White House. Hearing this took many of us back, to a very scarey time of unrest, and learning it was still so previlant, was so reto....
Well, I voted with my party, for Obama, and was sad to hear that as president elect he has had more death threats, that any other.
And doubly sad to hear he still has not quit smoking.
Why the division, why the extreameism? When we should be pulling together
in harmony, and peace, coexisting... we still have not learned our lesson, and there will be a "bump" in the road, to humble us, and shake us up.. Till we get it.

I'm actually very happy for Mr. White in that he has finally been given an opportunity to learn a lesson in life. He can hate all he wants, and use the racial slurs all he wants and he has every right to do so, just as we have every right to hold our opposing views. But threats don't pass the "free speech" test in the eyes of our judicial system, and if the judge or other triers of fact find that he did, in fact, threaten the president or anyone else, there's a price to be paid and a lesson to be learned.

After viewing Skinheads in America on Explore Channel, I found that even most Skinheads and White Supremacy Groups are racist against other White Supremacy followers. Yet they believe and spew similar rhetoric kill a couple of thousand Blacks, kill a thousand Jews, kill a thousand Asians, and so and so on.
One under lying factor is that White men built this country, White men can destroy this country. The basic ideals of this country was conceived in the eyes of White men, but if they go on the principal they built this country then those that truly think this has been staring at the sun to long. If it were not for those beaten slaves and those slaves that became innovators at those particular junction in human history were would we be today behind or ahead.
What of Einstein E=mc2? Was Einstein White before he was a Jew, Or the opposite? Or as a contributor in mans nuclear infancy age nothing more than a puppet, having his strings being manipulated in the masters hands?
What about our children? White Supremacy groups speak of the coming war that Every Bi-racial child should be exterminated, and every White person married to a Black Man again the opposite as well and those of their family, (the words of those radical groups) Exterminated.
Due to their inferior ideology and breeding habits.
Why don't the Skinheads adopt the Radical Muslim Extremist way of life, I really don't see any difference besides geographical location. Those followers on the program even suggest that these groups have followers called Insurgents.
These Insurgents are people in all levels of public office and government doing what they can to stifle growth and constrict minority community whenever possible.
Ever wonder about those gates around Section 8 housing and those isolated living areas low income people are fond of. Consider this erect a fence in the isolated areas and lock the gate on section areas and what do you have?

You make such an excellent point! White's mistake of being arrogant (and stupid) enough to threaten Obama will (hopefully) teach him a very hard lesson that he has needed to learn for a while which is that his words and actions have consequences.
And, not to be antagonistic, but can anyone say that race relations in this country will ever NOT be an important topic?? This article isn't giving attention to White as much as it is giving us the chance to analyze and voice our positions on a rather delicate and significant subject. And if he is being given attention, it is attention to how words do matter and they can land you in jail!

Don't get it twisted. Once a Black kid from a neighboring area told me, "man I'm gonna kill you." Me and several friends took it as a joke.
30 minutes later he shot me in the back. While in the Emergency room triage x-rays showed the bullet went straight through my upper shoulder.
The White doctor that was treating me said, "That's all you n---- know how to do is shoot each other I ought to let you bleed to death y'all don't serve any purpose.
Our forefathers probably didn't go around casually threatening and shooting and deny aid to their fellow man.
Because that doctor walked out and left me bleeding on that stretcher, so if this is what you mean you and Dr. Eric Kinkaid can
go to hell.

The legal principle is a simple one ... yelling "fire" in a crowded theater is NOT protected speech; calling in false police reports is not protected speech; obscene language, as defined by the standards of the community, is not speech; interrupting a church service is not speech; disturbing the peace is not speech; telling a bank teller you are concealing a weapon and to please fill the bag with cash is not speech; mentioning the word 'hijack' on an airliner or in the line waiting to be screened is not speech; and threatening jurors, judges, elected officials or the president-elect is not speech. None of the above was ever intended to be protected by the First Amendment. There are cases and cases out there decided by conservative and liberal judges and justices, and very few, if any, have been decided differently.

Many of our friends here think Shanna's post is about race. I cannot agree with that view any less. Using the N-word or any other slur, as distasteful as it may be, is FREE SPEECH, and is protected by the first amendment. This column is, in my opinion, about our freedom of speech and what does not rise to that level. Most of Mr. White's rantings were perfectly OK from a legal standpoint, but he pushed the envelope until he finally crossed the line. While Shanna talks occasionally about race, it's what a lot of the folks want to hear, but she's never made a comment or expressed an opinion that even approached racism. Did I agree with her support for Obama? Nope. Did she agree with my support for McCain? Nope. And each of us had our reasons for our choice, none of which involved color. Do I respect her for making the choice she did? Yep, and I believe the feeling was mutual.

There were three crimes committed in the incident you described. First, was the threat to kill you. Second, the attempt to kill or maim you. Third, the doctor's refusal to treat you was a breach of the public trust and his Hippocritic (in his case) oath to render care to the injured. The racial slur by the doc, unfortunately, was protected speech under the First Amendment and was not a criminal offense.

When a man publicly advocates the death of another person, the threat is clear and present. His words are harmless as some people feel could encourage the weak minded. history and crime statistics have proven this time and time again.
What Bill White did was to encourage a group of individuals to arms to take another man's life. for what? his color of his skin? How absolutely stupid. The eradication of a race of beings in the name of a race war? More ignorance on top of ignorance.
Have we forgotten 2 of his followers arrested in Memphis TN. planned to kill 32 Black High School students some of which they planned on decapitating them, and carrying out a suicide pact to kill President Elect Obama all in the name of purification.
Yes there is the issue of race, but lets not overlook what his true mission was: he felt that by doing this, he was protecting his family.
The death of Obama by the hands of a White Man could have very well seen, city to city, thousands of people die.
This the true crime of this twisted sociopath, even by calling him sick gives him an excuse for his ranting. No man has the right to threaten another mans life.
To standby and watch it unfold as a bad joke would be unwise.

And back to the freedom of speech issue, I don't believe anyone here would say that phoning a bomb threat to a school or other public institution, albeit speech, was intended to be protected speech under the First Amendment.
