The metro columnist writes about local people whose circumstances reflect decisions made as near as City Hall or as far away as the halls of Congress. Other times, she weighs in on a topic because it is incredibly ridiculous. Or heartening. Or fascinating.

This article is so profound, its like u spoke to me on the phone. I lived all those expperiences with Harry. I went from a young boy to a grown man w/children going to Harry for more than just haircuts. I will never forget how proud Harry was when my uncle (Durell Coleman) was on Star Search. It taught me alot about community and how one person's good fortune can uplift others. This man helped UPLIFT alot of people in Roanoke. THANK U, HARRY!!

Barber shops are places where young men can get help on fixing a car, sports, or someone new to an area to establish himself among the local community. Never knowing this man I know the importance of losing a man of this stature as a community fixture.

Longevity and wisdom is what will be missing. The Roanoke community has lost a permanent fixture one that will be hard to replaced.

I agree!! Harry was the best thing going during my junior high and high school years. I thought that I would lose my mind due to the fear of not having a "Harry's cut" in college. He will surely be missed. I can't begin to talk about the education that I received sitting in his shop. Those were definetly the days.
