Larger-than-life map of Africa brings learning and fun to ALMS

Salem city students will get chances to look at the map through this week.

Salem city's middle and elementary school will walk the Sahara desert, the plains of Ethiopia, and figure out where exactly Mt. Kilimanjaro is--all from the comfort of the Andrew Lewis Middle School gym.

A 35 x 26 foot, 106 lb. map with interactive tools, courtesy of National Geographic's "My Wonderful World" campaign, sits in the middle of the gym. When we visited, a class of eighth graders were utilizing the tool with the help of teacher Judith Painter.

The giant atlas will help kids more concretely connect with the concept of Africa. This particular eighth grade class is learning about weather phenomena--like the "Egypt flood from the Nile River," said student Desiree Davis.

But the kids didn't just ponder and walk around on the map. Jaleen Daniels' favorite activity with the huge atlas was "when we had to direct people with longtitude and latitude," aided by a previous exercise in longitude and latitude. Population and territories were also up for discussion--colored confetti and other visual aids took the learning to a different level.
