East Salem Elementary sponsors Family Reading Night

On Thursday, October 16th, East Salem Elementary sponsored a Family Reading Night. Attending families were treated to a dinner of pizza, salad, and homemade cookies. Following dinner, participants headed to grade level sessions. During those sessions, students and their parents made games and other materials to take home that would help improve reading skills and provide fun and challenging ways for parents to help with homework.
Several students from Debbie Stratton's Early Childhood class at Salem High School provided child care for younger siblings so parents could attend sessions with their school-age children.
Maximos and his parents, Joann and Victor Cardwell, complete a fun activity for the first grade level on reading night.
Those attending enjoyed the evening and gained valuable information. When Nicholas Cook, an East Salem first grader was asked about his favorite part of Family Reading Night, he responded, "I liked the cookies, the pizza, the water, and the fish game. I liked everything." Joann Cardwell, a first grade parent, commented, "It was great! We have learned so many new strategies to help him [son, Maximos] with his reading. Diane Rose, principal, deemed the night a huge success. "I think this will be a favorite parental involvement activity for both faculty and the East Salem community."
A highlight of the evening was the door prizes which were presented throughout the evening. Winning students received items such as magnetic letters, dry erase boards, and interactive books. Two East Salem parents, Dian Cook and Stephanie Webber, each received a $25 gas card.
East Salem will host a Family Math Night this winter.
