Police statement on fatal train-truck crash near Salem

The Roanoke County Police Department has just released the following statement on the fatal train-truck crash in western Roanoke County this afternoon. For more on this story from the Roanoke Times newsroom, click here.

The police statement follows:

Collision With Train Kills One in Roanoke County

• Type of Crash: Two Vehicle Crash

• Date of Crash: 11/18/2008 Time of Crash: 1:12pm

• Location of Crash: Garman Road (Glenvar area of Roanoke County)

• Investigating Officer: Officer B. T. Smith

• Victim Name(s): identity withheld pending notification of family

• Suspect Name(s): n/a

• Charges if Applicable: n/a

• The road was blocked to traffic

• Alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor.

• Seatbelts were not worn by the victim(s).

• Weather was not a factor in the crash.

• Additional Remarks: A dump truck loaded with concrete attempted to cross the railroad tracks at the end of Garman Road behind the Kroger Warehouse. A coal train traveling north struck the right side of the dump truck. The driver of the dump truck was ejected from the truck and killed. The truck caught fire following the crash. Roanoke County Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The are no signals or gate at the railroad crossing. The investigation of the crash is continuing.
