You don't have to drive to Blacksburg, Radford, or Harrisonburg to get great quality college performances and lectures-check out what's happening right here in Salem for the next few weeks at Roanoke College. (Make sure to see if you can make it to the holiday choir and jazz/concert ensembles-some of them are free.)

Lecture
Thursday, November 20, 7:30 p.m. Colket Center Wortmann Ballroom. No tickets required.
Eric Weitz, distinguished McKnight University professor and holder of the Arsham and Charlotte Ohanessian Chair in the department of history at the University of Minnesota, will speak on the topic, "Why was the 20th century the century of genocides?" Weitz's visit is hosted by the Jordan Endowment for the Humanities.
Theatre Roanoke College Fall Production

TRC presents Sarah Ruhl's "Eurydice," a touching, "deliriously imaginative" and whimsical reframing of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
College Choir Concert
Sunday, November 30, 3 and 5 p.m. St. Andrew's Catholic Church. No tickets required.
Roanoke College Choir presents the 24th annual Lessons and Carols of Christmas, one of the longest running holiday traditions in the Roanoke Valley. The acclaimed Roanoke College Choir will sing a blend of traditional and new Christmas music and lead the audience in familiar carols. A free-will offering to support the work of Roanoke Area Ministries will be received.
Wind and Jazz Ensembles Concert
Thursday, December 4, 7:30 p.m. Olin Theater. No tickets required.
The Roanoke College Wind and Jazz Ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Joseph Blaha, will present their holiday concert. The Jazz Ensemble will perform works from the libraries of the Count Basie Orchestra and Buddy Rich Band as well as the music of contemporary jazz band leaders and writers influenced by those great bands. The Wind Ensemble will perform works of Bach, Bernstein and Shostakovich along with the world premiere of a new work and a medley of traditional, seasonal music that was commissioned by The United States Marine Corps Band.
Kandinsky Trio Concert
Saturday, December 6, 8 p.m. Olin Theater. Tickets are $20for the general public and $12 for students and senior citizens and can be purchased by calling the Olin Box Office, Monday through Friday, 1 - 4 p.m. at (540) 375-2333 or by visiting www.roanoke.edu/tickets.
The concert will celebrate the music of 18th and 19th-century Vienna, along with a piece from 2005 Amsterdam. Starting off will be Mozart's resplendent Trio in E Major, followed by Hanging Around, a recent piece by the brilliant Dutch composer Robert Nasveld. Brahms' Trio in B Major will close the program. Enormous in its scope of ideas and grandeur, this work is one of the most beloved in the chamber music repertoire.
Children's Choir Concert

The Roanoke College Children's Choir presents "Christmas Joy," its 22nd annual Christmas concert. Come enjoy the magic and beauty of Christmas while listening to the angelic sounds of the 270 voices making up the choir.
