Glenvar Coalition's third meeting makes plans for school year

In its third meeting this year on Tues. Nov. 18, the Glenvar Coalition started to form its plans for the rest of the school year and cemented its upcoming task, Project "Sticker Shock."

In mid-December, they will tag alcoholic products in several convenience stores in the area with reminder stickers not to give alcohol to minors. "This is not aimed at curbing alcohol sales, just in discouraging buying alcohol for minors," Tabitha Cain, leader of the coalition and member of the Roanoke Valley Youth Prevention Council.

The group is made up of high schoolers appointed by Glenvar High administration, teacher sponsors like Sherry Gearhart, D.A.R.E. Officer Morris, and administrators like asst. principal Sonya Cline. Their motto this year, chosen by the students is "be the footprint that people want to follow." They used it during Red Ribbon Week, and the mantra will soon be used county-wide.

"We're looking for community members to participate. We're in a school, we can get the kids," said Nancy Hans, Roanoke County Council Coordinator. The meetings are monthly and those interested in the council can get the next date via email from Cain (andrewtabitha01@comcast.net). The next one will be before December 20, when the students will implement Project Sticker Shock.

Other projects that the dozen-or-so teen members will undertake include structured programs for Glenvar Middle School. Tuesday's meeting included brainstorming ways to relate serious and seemingly far-away topics like drugs, alcohol, and bad situations to a sixth-grader without losing relevancy.

"They need to find someone who can get the facts straight," said senior Kyle Horne. Also on the agenda-brainstorming topics for Glenvar High's Parent-Teacher Association conference in March next year.
