Glenvar Elementary partners with Fort Lewis Baptist to feed hungry families
Although Jessica Akers's fourth grade class brought in the most boxed and canned goods-156 nonperishables to be exact, Glenvar Elementary's full contribution to its own needy families totaled well over 700 items. This year is at least the sixteenth that the school has partnered with Fort Lewis Baptist to provide Thanksgiving meals to needy families in both the school and the congregation.
The school provides the nonperishable and canned items, and the church provides perishables like eggs, butter, milk, and a turkey or ham. They also discreetly deliver the dinner ingredients.
"We are just excited to help the community," said pastor Leonard Southern. His philosophy is that "a church building shouldn't stand empty during the week," and Fort Lewis Baptist's doors are open to all sorts of meetings throughout the week-not to mention that the church also houses electronic voting booths and doughnuts on election days.
