The Salem Food Pantry needs volunteers for the annual Postal Food Drive
On Saturday, May 9, postal workers across the Roanoke Valley will pick up donations of non-perishable food along with their regular delivery and pick-up of mail. The donations made in 24153 will go to the Salem Food Pantry, and they'll need help at their sorting station at the Salem Civic Center that day!
Last year's drive raised around 20,000 lbs. of food. That's nearly ten tons!!!
Volunteers are needed from 12 to 6 p.m. at the back of the Salem Civic Center. The most volunteers are needed after 2 p.m., and anyone middle-school aged on up can help!
Call Jenny McCormack or leave her a message at 389-6938, the Salem Food Pantry, if you plan on coming. They will provide pizza and soft drinks to registered volunteers around 2:30 p.m., she said.
For folks that plan to donate - leave your non-perishable foods next to your mailbox late Friday night or early Saturday morning. McCormack suggests you check the "use by" or "expires on" dates. Her rule of thumb is that "if you wouldn't want to eat it, chances are somebody else wouldn't either."
