Glenvar grads' shared experience

Here's a question and answer, just after graduation practice on Monday morning, with a cross section of the Highlander's graduating class of 2009.

First row, from left:
Korie Philpott, Washington and Lee University
Martha Garman, Concord University
Sarah Montgomery, Virginia Western University, then plans to transfer to University of Virginia
Derek Abdelnour, Virginia Commonwealth University
Nick Cannata, National College

Second row, from left:
Chris Lawson, Virginia Tech
Chayse Smith, Mechanic on Tractor Trailers
Mark Johnson, Virginia Tech
Josh Flinchum, Military police in the Army
Justin Williams, University of Virginia

Q: What's it like to be so close to technically being an adult?

Josh: It's kind of harder because you have more responsibilities than you did when you were younger.

Q: What responsibilities have you noticed you've been getting?

Korie: We had to choose colleges and that kind of stuff by ourselves.

Nick: Bills and stuff, like car insurance, cell phone, paying for your own food.

Q: What's the most generic question people are asking you right now?

Chris: What are you going to do with your life?
Korie: How does it feel to graduate?
Chris: Are you going to miss high school?

Q: What are some of your answers?

Sarah: No [not missing high school] I'm really excited about college.
Derek: I know what I'm going to do, I mean I personally want to be a trauma surgeon in an E.R.

Q: How many of you know what you want to do after college, for the rest of your life?

A: Four of ten.

Korie: I have an idea but I don't know what I want to do 100 percent.

Q: What are you going to miss the most from Glenvar High school?

Josh: The teachers
Derek: Sports
Korie: Everyone's really close, how close we are a family
Josh: All the people here and a teachers, everybody in school - well, almost everybody. (laughs)

Q: Who is the most animated teacher?

Derek: Mr. Campbell, government. He's really laid back, too.

All: You could say Agee ...

Q: What questions are you asking your parents right now?

Justin: When do we get money?
Derek: Are you paying for my laptop?
Martha: Are you going to miss me?? No, my dad said he was taking my room!, (laughs)

Q: What's the funniest experience you've had a Glenvar?

Derek: Groovyteens.
Justin: Yeah
Chris: We've gotta say something better than Groovy Teens ...
Sarah: The senior prank.
Chayse: Clint Cassell dancing at prom!
